*Please read entire description prior to booking.
Authentic Maine Cottage for folks looking to unplug. The cottage is not perfect or fussy. Thoughtfully and tastefully updated late 1800's cape farmhouse bordering a Christmas tree farm in the quintessential lobster town of Blue Hill, Maine. Original art, form/function and comfort. All the essentials needed to initiate your technology detox, plow through a great book, or write your own debut novel? This is area that "Charlotte's Web" was fashioned after. Generations of creative types and independent thinkers have started here.
The New York Times Travel section published a piece entitled, "Blue Hill, a Literary Enclave, Grows in DownEast Maine."
Reconnect with the ones you love at the fire pit. Watch the young family of turkeys wade through young saplings, or collect wild lupine by the roadside after a fruitful day of wild blueberry picking. Have you ever made a fireside cobbler? Enjoy a scenic rides to Stonington for 44 North Coffee and chowder on the pier, while Lobsterman ebb and flow with the their bounties and hosing down their orange rubber pants, just to head out again...
The cottage offers ample parking for a modest boat to launch at Blue Hill dock. Wade at low tide at the beach/park overlooking nearby islands. There's a very nice, clean, playground there.
The Space: Well appointed, comfortable and exceedingly unique. Bright colors, sunny rooms, clean and refreshed farmhouse cape that is at once quaint and cheery. Three separate sleeping areas with two private rooms and a sleeping loft. A petite flat screen TV (no cable), DVD player for late night movies and Flashback Atari showdowns! Eat lunch outside on the picnic table, or have an evening cocktail via outdoor lantern-light. Fire pit to roast weenies or make smores, or just get warm on a chilly evening.
Guest access: Come and go as you please! Utter privacy, free reign of the place (but no access to basement is allowed), no neighbors.
Guest interaction: We'll connect via email/text prior to your stay for directions and I'll check in via phone/text to see if you're settled in! I'm available as much or as little as desired via phone! Need some ideas for dinner? Ring or text me! I have staff in place for emergencies and am available by phone at any time. My house manager is nearby to handle any potential issues.
Neighborhood overview: Neighbors this week include a young family of wild turkeys, deer, bunnies, and the occasional moose. The cottage sits on a country road but there are frequent cars/pick ups passing by.
Tiny apples cover trees surrounding the will be cider and applesauce come October.
******There is no WIFI internet, cable, or phone***** This is intentional. If you are looking to work during your stay, please plan to use your cell phone as a hotspot. But if you are looking to slow down, this is a great place to do just that. You want a good laugh? Forget Youtube. Play a round of Balderdash!
We are close enough to Acadia for day trips, and only four miles from town. Get a lobster roll or fresh fish and chips at The Fishnet, take a course at the Woodenboat School in Brooklin (you can build your own Northeaster Dory with master builder, George Krewson), take the ferry to nearby islands to explore, or inhale a whole lobster at Perry's Lobster Shack in Surry, the town next door. Don't forget the blueberry pie and homemade ice cream!
It's a magical place, suspended in time, with hearty, friendly folks, and great local food and brews. Worried about being too remote? Blue Hill is one of the only towns in Downeast Maine with it's own hospital.
Getting around: No public transportation (unless you include the ferry system). Lots of parking at the cottage and in Blue Hill harbor. Bring your kayaks, or a smallish watercraft. Blue Hill is a great place to walk! There are galleries, shops, books, a museum, and lots of shore to explore.
Other things to note: Laundry service at Blue Hill Village available but not on-site. ***The cottage is one of the oldest homes in Blue Hill and one of the original farmhouses so takes a few minutes to get the shower temp right. Please be patient!
***The property is now available from October-May for long-term bookings at a deeply discounted price. Contact me for details or a quote. The cottage is the perfect (!) basecamp for traveling, creative types who desire a special place to create or decompress! I'd encourage you to read my reviews to see just how well it's been reviewed and enjoyed by my guests! *Previous guests please contact me with your interested travel dates and I will send you a special offer! ***All artwork is copyrighted and may not be reproduced without prior permission.

Property is the perfect size for a family of 5. Great location. Close enough to explore Acadia and avoid the crowds and lots to do nearby. Host has great suggestions and responds quickly to any questions.
Exactly as described. The place was decorated just the way I love it - lots of colors and different kinds of things. Our stay was nice and it was good to detox for a few days. Close to Bar Harbor and Acadia. Jennifer was very friendly and caring as a host. She wanted us to call her to make sure we arrived okay which is sweet but unusual for most VRBO bookings I've had. The only negative was the stairs to the 2nd floor are pretty steep but other than that we had a GREAT TIME!
This historic cottage was inspirational and artistic. It was close to Coastal beaches and lighthouses. We were visiting family and able to see beautiful area scenery. The cottage was supplied with fun games and books for all ages, perfect for rainy day weather. Area touring information was helpful. A delightful vacation experience for our family.
Our family of five stayed here on our way up the Maine coast. The cottage was perfect for us - our kids (9,7,5) loved their upstairs bedrooms and nooks to hang out in, and we all enjoyed cooking and relaxing downstairs.
There’s plenty to do nearby if you’re up for some driving. We were out during the days and enjoyed coming back each evening for dinner. The cottage is colorful and charming.
This charming, colorful cottage was a perfect fit for our family vacation! The artistic charm and basic comforts of home made it a cozy place for us. Jen was very easy to work with!
Our stay at Cranapple Cottage was terrific! The cottage was lovely. The location was in perfect proximity to our destinations of Blue Hill, Surry, Ellsworth, Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor and Acadia National Park!
Good location, easy access from road. Nice kitchen and living room. Great place to call "home" this season.

Liked: Cleanliness, check-in, communication
Disliked: Listing accuracy
We had to wait a day for someone to come and get the television out for us. The stove failed to get hot enough for us to boil water to cook lobster. The owner did purchase an electric skillet for our use. She tried to take care of us but we still struggled with the outdated equipment.
Everything about our stay at Crabapple Cottage was perfect. The home is beautiful (and way more spacious than it appears in the photos), charming, and well-appointed. Something about it was just so comfortable and relaxing. 10/10 and will definitely be back again! Jen you’re awesome thank you for making this trip so seamless for us!
A lovely and quiet stay at Jen's Blue Hill cabin - just a few minutes from the town center, and an hour to Bar Harbor and Acadia. We used this as a quieter, more remote stay than trying for somewhere right in Acadia. The property was clean, just as described, and very comfortable. Interesting history too! Jen was fabulous and very communicative. Recommended!
We had a great stay here for a long weekend visiting the area. The cottage was very clean and the decor was very nice. The paint, floors and art work all seem like they have been recently updated. The floors are a little uneven but that's to be expected in an older cottage. My son loved playing the board games 😁
Loved our stay in this charming historic cottage in Maine! From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this place was a true gem. Nestled in a picturesque, tranquil setting, the cottage had all the character you’d expect from a historic home. It's vintage touches that made the atmosphere feel warm and inviting. We enjoyed exploring the nearby towns full of local shops and restaurants. It was the ideal place to unwind and disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The owner was incredibly thoughtful and welcoming, providing us with local recommendations and making sure we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The cottage was stocked with all the amenities we could ask for, and the attention to detail really made a difference. We can’t recommend this cottage enough to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway steeped in history and natural beauty. We’ll definitely be back!
We loved our stay at Crabapple cottage- the house itself is cozy, bright, and clean. We were very impressed with the whole house water being filtered- thanks!! We don't mind not having a dishwasher on vacation, however, we found the kitchen to be needing some upgrades with the stove-top and could have been improved with some fun family cooking items such as a cookie sheet or muffin tins for baking. Overall, we were happy with our stay. We really enjoyed visiting nearby Acadia National Park, despite the hour drive each way. Our host was most cordial and communicative! Thanks Jen for a lovely stay! We hope our feedback on the kitchen experience helps for future renters.
We had a really nice escape at the Crabapple Cottage! Jen was an excellent host and answered all our questions; more than usual I am sure due to travel in time of COVID. We dug mussels and picked wild blueberries and had our quota of fresh fish and lobster. Visited National and State parks and local wildlife sanctuaries and reservations both sea side and woods and hills. Saw the comet and a billion stars. And just relaxed in the cottage and also was able to get some work done. My son is now hooked on Atari and wants to move to Maine. Couldn't have asked for more!
What’s not to love about this cheerful little farmhouse cottage? We wanted the opportunity to visit Acadia National Park and the surrounding area, but we didn’t want to be in the thick of things during high season. This location turned out to be just right. Blue Hill is a quiet, friendly little town. Mountains, ocean, winding roads through forests, fresh food, fresh air, and a sky full of stars. Jen not only made sure we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay, but thoughtfully suggested activities and places to explore. She’s such a warm, pleasant host! The cottage and grounds were very clean and well-maintained. The second floor feels like a luxurious treehouse and was perfect for our two teen girls. Our one week stay wasn’t long enough for any of us! :)

Such a wonderful time!
If you are looking for a place to unwind and relax then this is the place. This was our second time to Blue Hill, but our first time with children and our first time staying at the cottage. The cottage is so beautiful and comfortable, and the perfect place to cook a nice meal, have a campfire, or take an afternoon nap. Our kids loved the Atari and we rented a few movies for the evening. Blue Hill is awesome because there are things to do in town (going to the beach/park, kayaking in the inner harbor - we even saw a seal, shopping, a very conveniently located grocery store), and it is such a perfect place for quick or long daytrips (Acadia and Bar Harbor, Surry for Pugnuts Icecream, Ellsworth for shopping and burritos at 86 This, 44 North Coffee and hiking). Everyone is so helpful and kind, it's just a great place to be.
The art throughout the cottage was so beautiful, and the colors were refreshing. It was immaculate and we had everything we needed (even a French press for coffee!). We were able to stay cool enough with the convenient fans throughout the house, despite it being in the 90s a few days while we were there. Jennifer was very helpful with travel tips and the whole process was seamless. This second trip to Blue Hill confirmed that we definitely want to come back to the same area in a few years, and would love to stay here again!
Crabapple Cottage is a nice spot away from the busyness of the downtown touristy areas. While it’s in a rural area, it is good to know that's on a busy road, and one with noisy traffic at all hours. The cottage is nice and private, with a good-sized living room, dining table, well-stocked kitchen, and full bathroom. Our family of four enjoyed having their own spaces in the upstairs loft and the downstairs bedroom. The cottage is nicely decorated, bright, cheery, and welcoming. As a family, we enjoyed playing the games left by Jen, and our kids enjoyed the TV and DVD player in the upstairs bedroom. However, for those who don’t do well on uneven floors or need air conditioning to remove the humidity, this is not the place for you. We stayed during one of the wettest weeks in July, and it was tough not to feel damp. A window unit air conditioner would have been fantastic just to take the humidity out so our towels would dry. Do realize this is an older home, so while it has charm, it also has challenges. The stairs up to the loft are very steep, and there is no way to close them off for very young children. Finally, for those who need supportive furniture or beds, please know everything here is very soft. Jen is an excellent host and offered many great suggestions for places to eat and things to do. Follow her suggestions! We had a great time picking wild blueberries, making Jen’s cobbler, and eating lobster. Overall, a nice place for a week away!
