About this property

1885 Farmhouse Luxuriously Renovated: Animals & Antiques

  • For more info and history, visit thehistoricfarmhouse.com! Built in 1885, this home is one of the oldest in the area and has been beautifully updated through extensive renovations while carefully preserving its historic charm. Surrounded by mountain ranges and century old oak trees, The Historic Farmhouse sits on a quiet, scenic byway, one of the last remaining original gravel roadbeds in North Carolina. During the Civil War, this turnpike was an important part of the Underground Railway and served travellers for nearly 200 years.

Imagine yourself rocking on the front porch chairs, a drink and/or book in hand. This very spot is where James Wilburn Whitehead, a determined pioneer who arrived in 1872 with a gun, two hogs, and a dog would once look out over the hundreds of acres that he owned. Here, you are able to experience the same timeless beauty and tranquility that drew in the first settlers over a century ago, but without sacrificing any modern luxuries. You will enjoy peaceful mornings and evenings filled with wildlife such as deer and turkeys, but you're still just 2 minutes outside of city centre Banner Elk.

You and your loved ones can settle into the mountain view hammock or circle around the backyard fire pit for starlit conversations and s’mores. The huge master suite is a sanctuary in itself, featuring a private sitting area, a garden tub with a view for a relaxing soak, and a luxurious three function shower. You will surely enjoy the warmth and comfort of heated floors and high end appliances. You're also just 10 minutes from Sugar and Beech Mountain ski resorts, or you can even enjoy an epic sledding hill right outside your front door (sleighs provided). Toys, books, and games are also available for children. For those special times of year like Thanksgiving and Christmas, we decorate to ensure your holiday stay is filled with extra magic and cheer.

But what truly makes The Historic Farmhouse special are the memories made with our little farm animal family. You will wake up to the sound of the birds chirping, and then head across the street to collect fresh eggs from “The Ladies” for breakfast. Visit our horse Dusty in the large field, who gallops over and whinnies when he’s called. His pasture mate is our mini donkey, Dobby, who may be small but insists he’s just as grand as Dusty. Our adorable goats BamBam and Molly are always eager to accept a gentle pet or a tasty nibble of fresh grass too! We are offering you an authentic, interactive farm experience that connects you to the land's rich agricultural past and creates one of a kind memories for guests of all ages.

The restoration of The Historic Farmhouse has been a true labour of love for the Lehmann family, as Paul himself grew up making childhood memories within its very walls. The Historic Preservation Foundation of North Carolina has even recognised our extreme dedication to bringing The Farmhouse's unique character and history back to life. We are honoured and very excited to share this especially unforgettable farm experience with you. It would be selfish to keep it all to ourselves!

What a slice of heaven nestled in Banner Elk! From the impeccable decor, the history, the treat basket, and the little farm with animals- these owners have thought of everything. We even got a personal visit to make sure we were prepared for inclement weather. One of the best places we have ever stayed. Highly recommend. We will be back!

Our family (6 adults) stayed just one night and we wished we had had time for a longer stay. The property is even better than described. The historical renovation is perfect and it is well decorated with appropriate antiques. We enjoyed visiting the farm's animals as well as the deer that visited us in the evening. The porch was a hit: we sat on the porch in the dark to watch the fireflies rise and enjoyed it again for early morning coffee. If we had been able to stay another night we would have loved to have a campfire in the area provided just uphill. The area has a peaceful vibe that elevated our porch sitting to an art form. Seriously, book this property. It's clean, it's unique, lots of bonus perks including farm animals, farm fresh eggs, and there's even a hammock uphill near the woods. Relaxing country atmosphere. And a to-die-for master.

We had a wonderful stay with four adults and two kids (ages 10 and 8). We visited for Tweetsie’s Ghost Train and loved setting the mood by reading spooky stories to the kids while relaxing in the front porch rocking chairs. The home is full of character and charm. Our kids especially enjoyed the animals and the hammock. Highly recommend to anyone visiting the area!

We loved our stay at the farmhouse! The home is impeccably maintained and there were too many lovely touches and comforts to the home to list. In addition to all the lovely things you see in the pictures and read in the reviews, we had a welcome package, food to feed the animals, well stocked kitchen, high quality towels and linens, and specialty soaps to enjoy. We enjoyed discovering the historical artifacts preserved on the property. Each room has its own character and charm. Extraordinary! Thank you for sharing your home with us.

This property was great! Lots of room and in superb condition. Rustic look but modern amenities. Kids loved the outdoor space and the farm animals. Fire pit and grill with outdoor seating. Gracious hosts! (Did not ski - but the review would not post unless I entered something about the skiing?)

This home is so much more than just a place to stay. We were in town for a much needed girls trip. From the minute we pulled into the driveway, we were in awe. Upon entering the home, we all fell in love. So much attention and care has been devoted, words don’t seem adequate. The beds are incredibly comfortable, the home is immaculately clean. The best way to describe it is that it feels like a hug. We can’t wait to go back and next time we plan to stay longer.

Beautiful family spot!

The Historic Farmhouse is the coziest home we’ve ever stayed in. Each room is beautiful and comfortable. There are so many places to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or glass of wine. Our kids loved visiting the animals and exploring the woods behind the house. Highly recommend this house!

Perfect family spot

We had such an amazing time at the farmhouse! Everything was comfortable, clean and beautiful. From the large soaking tub overlooking the tranquility of the mountains to the comfy beds, we had such a great time our kids didn’t want to leave. It’s the perfect location to go to Beech mountain and take advantage of the free sledding hill. We’ll be back :)

I feel like this house is the best kept secret in banner elk. The house and location are even better than the photos. Beds where comfortable and kitchens was modern, although it still kept the historical charm. We wanted to stay longer. If you want to be close to banner elk town center and have access to significant sights like Blue Ridge parkway or grandfather mountain I would highly recommend this this place. Plus you get access to see the animals on the farm. The host left a great care package. They went beyond my expectations

Mountain Trip

My family goes to Banner Elk every year for vacation in the fall, this is the best home we’ve stayed at! It has all the characteristics of an old home, with all the comforts of a new home and everything is high end. My daughter loved being able to feed the animals each day and walking the property. I highly recommend this home.

Paul and Fabiana's home is one of those special VRBOs where it's obviously more than just a rental- to them, it's a special place they wish to share with others. A family home lovingly and respectfully restored in that rare way that perfectly balances historic preservation with modern touches and comforts. From the family and period antique furniture to the warmth of the gas fire places, the historic springhead to the luxurious three-faucet master shower, the view from the front porch or the peace from the sunroom, this home is everything you or your family want in a relaxing stay. Our hosts even left treats for our children to share with Dusty the horse, the goats and hens across the street, for which we were rewarded with fresh eggs the next morning for breakfast.Communication and access instructions were easy and simple, as was checkout. The location is convenient for both skiing or mountain exploring. Our family has already determined that this will be our next mountain rental, and we are certain you'll be happy if it's yours as well.

Exceptional

The house is beautiful and comfortable. It had everything we needed and we enjoyed cooking, relaxing and venturing off. The property and the walks we took visiting the animals and the scenery was so enjoyable. The host(s) could not be more accommodating. Each room is impeccable and the history of the home and land. We saw turkeys and deer in the mornings as each room has a scenic view. You are literally 4 mins from town so convenient, and we we’re comfortable dropping our boys off at Sugar Mountain for full day ski sets. We can’t wait to come back and share this trip with our friends. We are refreshed and recharged.
