Take a step back in time along the Augustinerstrasse in Mainz. The street, open only to foot traffic, runs straight through the German city’s Old Town. Although you could walk the length of the Augustinerstrasse in less than 10 minutes, take your time to explore and appreciate the many historic buildings lining the street. In World War II, bombing destroyed many of the old buildings in Mainz, which makes the historic structures remaining along the Augustinerstrasse all the more special. Admire half-timbered homes, colourful sandstone arches and ornate rococo details. The Augustinerstrasse connects two of Mainz’s main streets: Neutorstrasse to the south and Leichhof to the north. The road has been a main route in the city since the Middle Ages and has been widened and straightened over the years. The Augustinerstrasse was one of the city’s main market streets in the 16th century. Today, it has been revived as a shopping and dining destination for locals and visitors. Search for antiques, souvenirs made by Mainz craftspeople and other unique finds in its many boutiques. Sit in a café or wine bar and watch the city unfold around you. Enjoy local German fare at one of the street’s many restaurants. Discover quaint destinations along the narrow side streets off the Augustinerstrasse. The magnificent Augustinerkirche, or St. Augustine's Church, dominates the street. At the southern end of the Augustinerstrasse, continue walking for a few minutes until you reach the ruins of a Roman theatre. (895 reviews) This hotel is not that close to the airport. I don't know how it can be called the aoirport hotel. The front desk is not that attentive. I like hotels that has 24/7 front desk operation. This hotel's front desk closes after 10:30pm, but even when it is open it is almost non existent. The room do not have a coffee machine or a kettle to make tea. I wish I had a kettle in the room. I also did not realize that I had to turn on the knob on the heater in the room. I slept in cold the first night, as there were no front desk to call and ask why the room was cold. I was not told (when I checked in) that I am myslf responsible to turn the heat on in the room.
