Pocket Guide: Isle of Lewis Arnol Blackhouse Hotels

The Outer Hebrides offer you tranquillity, history and staggering beauty. Visit ancient stone monuments and experience traditional crofting culture in this vibrant Gaelic community. Cross the water from mainland Scotland to the Western Isles and you’ll enter an island paradise, packed with things to do. For a selection of cosy Hebrides hotels, enter your travel dates into Expedia’s search tool.

The Blackhouse, Arnol

The Outer Hebrides have a long association with traditional Scottish farming techniques. The islands have undergone modernisation in the last 100 years, but they still retain an old-world atmosphere. Once upon a time Hebridean crofters would live with their animals in thatched blackhouses. The Blackhouse at No 42 Arnol is the last original house of its kind in the area.

Learn About the Past

Preserved as a visitor attraction by historic Scotland, the Arnol Blackhouse offers an insight into a lost way of life. Having animals in these unusual homes made them warmer for farming families and meant that extra buildings didn’t need to be built. Peat fires in the houses were a hub around which family life took shape — see for yourself and then wind down at an Arnol Blackhouse hotel.
