Paying £175 a night for this hotel felt like daylight robbery. It’s extremely dated and our room was tiny, dark and noisy as it looked out onto the main road. When we asked if there were any better rooms available because we weren’t happy with ours, we were shown a bigger (but still dated and extremely average) room which we were told we would have to pay an extra £40 a night for which we were not prepared to do when we were already paying an extortionate amount for what it was. We had friends staying in the hotel who were paying the same amount, if not less, who had rooms twice the size which I can’t fathom. Restaurant staff were sweet but the service was very poor and the food extremely average. And last but not least, the spa was not included, had it been then the price for the room would have been marginally more acceptable. Certainly not a 4 star hotel, I would have put it at 3 at a push.

I can't say enough good things about my stay here. 1st was how safe myself and my husband felt leaving me alone at the hotel for several days while he worked. It was an amazing rejuvenating stay..amazing spa, meals, room, views, walking trails...I can't wait to go back. This is my go to spot for life!

I can’t make any comment about the Spa as we didn’t use those facilities. I can say that the staff were polite and friendly, unfortunately that’s where the good points end. Our room was up three flights of stairs, in the eaves, the room was pretty small and the small double bed was hard and uncomfortable, the attached bathroom was cold and sterile and felt like the washroom in an abattoir. The bar area was a countertop with a bell where someone would attend eventually, the bar consisted of a fridge and bottle opener. The conservatory was a nice area but so cold we kept our coats on. We chose the Bistro dining and felt the very limited choice was overpriced. We asked if the ‘sticky toffee pudding’ came with custard rather than ice cream, the waitress did check with the fine dining chef, but unfortunately it was just ice cream. I couldn’t sleep for long on the small hard bed so went downstairs to the reception area, where all internal and external doors were locked, I guess someone was checking for fire hazards through the night but I didn’t see anyone between 3 - 7am. The hotel is desperate for a makeover but I wouldn’t go back even if it was.

An Acceptable Stay
Reception experience was good. Breakfasts were varied and well presented. Dinner menu was a bit limited and doesn't change day-to-day so a week's stay might involve having the same thing at least twice. Food in restaurant was overpriced for the quantity served and that is before any sides or wines are added. The room we had was in an outside block but was perfectly adequate. A couple of minor issues were reported to Reception at checkout. At checkout, we were not offered a detailed bill to check but the card reader, with the total already inserted, was handed over. Fortunately I had a mental idea of the likely cost and the total was around that sum. Staff were all very helpful and professional. I don't expect to be staying here again and wouldn't recommend to family or friends.

Relaxing staycation
We had a great break away. Our room was beautiful and spacious. Loved the spa treatment I had and also the use of the Hydrotherapy/Sauna etc. The staff were all very friendly. The food was beautiful in both the bistro and restaurant. Our only downfall was that we didn’t get great internet but hey we were there to chill out and relax.

Mixed picture.
My wife and I stayed 3 nights, visiting the area for a wedding. Location is excellent, overlooking Appleby and close to the centre. The food and the service overall was good, but with exceptions. The things which brought our rating down was reception and the rooms. My wife has a dietary requirement and I rang reception a few days before arrival to go through it. On arrival none of this dietary information had been passed to the kitchen. On explaining directly to the kitchen they handled it well. Check in itself was slow, having to repeat information I had given in the earlier telephone call. The biggest issue was the room quality for the star rating. We were put in an upstairs room in the coach house, an external annexe to the hotel. The room was small and shabby. At first the cold water did not work, but after a visit from the manager he got it going. Then the shower would not work properly, with at first only cold water. Then suddenly there was a surge of really hot water causing scalding to my skin. We asked to move rooms, and one was found for the next day. We stayed in the original room that night and it was very hot and opening windows resulted in high road noise from the nearby A road. A poor room and we got no sleep. We also had the stress of changing rooms on a day of the wedding. The next room was on the ground floor, much larger, with good ventilation. However, it was tired and very dull. Our annexe rooms we regarded as poor quality for what appears a good hotel.

Lovely garden room with outside patio seating. Wonderful views. Pleasant staff. Bistro meals very pleasant and good value; main courses in restaurant of limited choice and quite expensive. Full English breakfast looked good, but, if, like us, a lighter breakfast is preferred, the choice was uninspiring, although this may have been due to limitations imposed due to Covid restrictions.

Chill weekend
We were in the Heelis suite which was very spacious, clean and warm, bathroom had his and hers sinks, huge shower and a jacuzzi bath. Unable to book spa treatments but took the 3hr aqua thermal journey which was really good. Food in both the bistro and fine dining were exceptional. As was the service by all the staff. Lovely touch on check in by being given a guided tour of the facilities within the hotel.

Wonderful hotel

Top Notch Hotel
Our stay was excellent. My husband was not 100% well on arrival and is also disabled. The staff put themselves out for us and we were treated as people, rather than simply another guest.

Check in was good and we were shown to our room by the receptionist. Exterior appearance of room a bit shabby (in the coach house) and the room itself was disappointing given that we’d paid £136 for bed and breakfast. Not badly appointed - just not the quality of expected for the price and there were a few cobwebs hanging from the ceiling. As the hotel is a fair distance from Appleby we decided to eat in the bistro. Food was nice enough but really not very good value and service was slow. Good value drinks from the bar, though. Breakfast was an improvement with freshly cooked ‘main’ rather than a buffet and options such as buttermilk pancakes, haddock and kippers. The only reason I would return would be as part of a spa package.

Our Coach House rooms have recently been refurbished and have generally been well received, perhaps the decor was not to your taste. We have alerted our Housekeeping department about the cobwebs you say were hanging form the ceiling, this is not our usual standard and we apologise for the lapse. We have passed your comments about the Bistro onto our Food & Beverage Manager. We feel that the Bistro does offer good value.

We had a two night stay and absolutely loved it. We had a double garden view room with fabulous views. patio table & chairs. The room was large, super clean & a completely recently refurbished bathroom. The bed was of excellent quality. Great treats. Couldn’t fault it. Breakfast was a really lovely experience & excellent hosting. Great food, great service & yet not overly formal. Eat both nights at the bistro, again very reasonable & excellent food & service. We will most certainly be returning.

Appleby Manor is a lovely country house hotel, set in magnificent Cumbrian countryside, just on the outskirts of historic Appleby. We received a lovely warm welcome and were taken on a tour of the hotel public rooms and spa. Our bedroom was extremely spacious with king size bed and similar shower room. Pre dinner drinks in the conservatory were excellent followed by a delicious 3 course meal, of scallops and duck breast and dessert. We had a very comfortable and undisturbed sleep then into breakfast for a very varied menu, the full English was very tasty and filling. Our overnight stay was made all the better by the very able and friendly staff, that in my lifetime of hotel stays I have not found better anywhere. Excellent stay, congratulations to all the staff and I would highly recommend this hotel.
