The Black Bull is on the prettiest and most historic street in Appleby, a stunning 17th century grade II listed building in the historic market town. Once being the hotel to the neighbouring public house, it has served the local town and guests for centuries. You are instantly transported back in time once you are surrounded by many original features such as the exposed beams, flagged floors and doorways.
The local area is also steeped in history, just a few hundred yards from the front door at the top of Burougate is Appleby Castle, a 12th century keep, and in the opposite direction is St Lawrences Church on the banks of the River Eden, with elements dating back to the 12th century.
The property lies within the stunning Eden Valley with many quaint villages. Appleby is close to the course of a 268-mile National Trail, which passes by on its way from Middleton-in-Teesdale to nearby Dufton. With High Cup Nick and Dufton Pike on the trail and just a short drive away you have some amazing walks and adventures, while the Lake District National Park is less than 30 minutes away in car. You can take a trip on a lake cruiser or enjoy the epic scenery only found in the Lake District National Park.

Comfortable accommodation that suited our family group, with plenty of space, a well equipped kitchen and access to central Appleby with its good pubs and shops. The rooms were spacious, warm and the en-suites in every room were welcome plus the family bathroom for overspill. The private parking at the rear was good if a little tight for large cars. All in all a very good experience and one the family would willingly repeat.
A very well equipped accommodation situated in Appleby close to shops. Would definitely stay again.

Perfect place for a family gathering type of break.
Perfect place for a family gathering type of break. Appleby is peaceful and picturesque The black bull is spacious and the rooms comfy. Beds small but a great nights sleep. Decor is a little dated and the property is tired looking. Some improvements suggested in gardens both front and back. And minor maintenance is due (wall paper for example) All that said we had a marvellous time. Spacious dining table. Plenty of space. Nice touches with signage and plenty of board games. Gorgeous history. Fabulous break and great value for money Thank you black bull owners and please keep going. We noticed many places have closed down; such a shame.
