There is footpath access to the Pennine Way and local tracks with a variety of local attractions including the South Tynedale Steam Railway, lead mining heritage centres, a transport museum, hand made candle factory, and the historic charm of Alston one mile away, with its steep cobbled streets and good pubs. We had a lovely relaxing short break at Widows Cottage. It was easy to find just off the a-road, and Phil was there to greet us and show us in to an already lit fire. The cottage had all the amenities you would need for a much longer stay, and after settling in Phil came back to talk through everything we needed to know. The cottage was a great base to get out walking from, and very cosy in the cold evenings. Although just off an A-road you don't get any noise. The gravel track up to the cottage is pretty steep and bumpy, but my low powered hatchback managed it fine.
