The Sint-Cosmas and Damianus Church dates from 1957, although the Roman tower was built in the 13th century. The local mill was destroyed in 1945, but the current mill (named ‘Nooit Gedacht’) was built in 1958 to replace the old mill. Castle Bleijenbeek was built in the 1300’s after floods destroyed another castle in Afferden. After the World War, only ruins were left of the castle. Those are still there.

South of the town, the Eckeltse Beek flows from the Maas and northeast of Afferden is an area of river dunes, part of National Park The Maasduinen.
