Popular Sights Around the Achterhoek
The Dickens Museum is located in the picturesque 16th century town of Bronkhorst (also known as the smallest city of the Netherlands). The museum started as a collection of books, but has grown into a museum including a shop and theatre. Every December they organize the Dickens Festival. During the festival the theatre puts on a rendition of the Christmas Carol, with actors dressed in costumes and carollers on the street.
The biggest maze of Europe is Doolhof Ruurlo, open from April to October. Get lost in the maze while you find your way to the middle, where you can climb the tower for incredible views. There are also several walking and biking routes around Ruurlo, varying in length.
Zwarte Cross is the biggest motor cross event in the world, and the biggest paid music festival in the Netherlands. During four days, visitors can enjoy a mix of motor cross, music and stunts. There are several podiums with each their own genre of music. Almost 200,000 people visit the event each year.
The Grolsch Brewery was founded in Groenlo in 1615. The beer is sold in 70 countries all over the world. The brewery is now located in Enschede and you can take guided tours with tastings. The brewery regularly organizes special events during the year.
The town of Winterswijk is at least a thousand years old. The historical village is a great place to wander around and get a real feeling for the Dutch history. There are several monuments, religious buildings, and factories. The most historic street in Winterswijk is Nieuwstraat (formerly ‘de Lappenbrink’). The town is also home of the museum about the painter Piet Mondriaan; Villa Mondriaan.
