Very close to Ueno train station, but not so close as to be noisy. The public areas of the hotel are very modern-looking, particularly the very attractive restaurant/breakfast room. Speaking of which, breakfast, which we bought in advance, was good, although it's not a full buffet -- you choose one of the 4 entree options (all of which were tasty and made fresh) and then choose from some limited buffet items, such as cut melons, salad greens, etc. The hotel has a small gym that, at the time of our visit in mid-2023, was still requiring advance booking due to Covid concerns (guests from only 1 room at a time). Our room (and the hallway it was on) was somewhat dark and a bit bland in comparison to the public areas of the building, but quiet and clean. Beds are firm but we found them comfortable nonetheless. The blocks immediately adjacent are somewhat dull, but a 10-minute walk will bring you to the very lively Ueno/ Okachimachi shopping and restaurant area, which presents lots of possibilities. Ueno Park also is nearby and quite pleasant, while a roughly 20-minute walk will bring you to Akihabara, a rather intense shopping area. Overall, we preferred our stay over on the west side of Tokyo (Shinjuku), but this was a good alternate base. The Nohga Hotel is fine but a bit expensive for what it is.
