Palmer sits on the banks of the Matanuska River, 42 miles northeast of Anchorage. Although primarily a commuter community, the area has an agricultural heritage dating back to the New Deal and the founding of the Matanuska Colony. Palmer is perhaps best known as host to the Alaska State Fair, which is in turn famous for breaking word records in growing vegetables that are truly enormous.
