“Lovely property near Oxford”
The Hawkwell House is a simply elegant small hotel with an excellent restaurant. The residential hills where the hotel is located are green and quiet and it is just a few minutes walk to the very convenient bus to Oxford city center. Once on the bus you will be in city center in a few minutes. The staff at Hawkwell house were thoughtfully helpful and international. We had two rooms one in the main house and one in the nearby cottage and both were excellently appointed.
“Nice hotel in a quiet location”
It's a pleasant hotel just out of Oxford. The breakfast was included in our rate and was just fine. The onsite bar is also good and there's heaps of room to spread out and relax on the couches, and the bar prices are no more expensive than in town. It was about a 30 minute walk into Oxford centre, along a lovely part of the Thames river, though in wet weather it could have been a little inconvenient. The hotel had a pleasant and relaxed and quiet atmosphere. The internet was fast, there was heaps of onsite parking and the room was comfortable and clean. I would definitely recommend this place to others.
“style over substance”
Friendly staff and breakfast was good. Our room felt like we were in a cellar. Although it looked stylish it didn't work well. There were no drawers to put clothes just a shelf and a stylish but pointless waste of space beneath the top of the bedside cabinet. The sink took an age to drain away making it virtually unusuable. For a not inexpensive hotel it seemed a cheek to charge for access to their wifi.
“Excellent hotel”
A one night stay while visiting Oxford for dinner. Hotel is easily reached from the southern ring-road with directions on local road signs and ample parking. Attractive gardens and nice decor. Reception were welcoming and booked us our taxi to go out that evening and it arrived right on time. A taxi to central Oxford takes less than 10 minutes and was £7.50. If it had been better weather we would have walked along the river towpath which is about 25 minutes but well worth doing. Room was modern, comfortable and clean. Shower had good water pressure. Price for Oxford was competitive. When we got back we enjoyed a late night drink in the bar while watching the 1st Ashes Test on Sky. All staff were smartly dressed, polite and helpful. Breakfast in the morning was very good - plenty of choice (full English, cold meats, cheeses, fruit, cereal, toast, juices) and good coffee. The lounge with open fire, comfy sofas and newspapers is a particularly nice place to spend the evening when it's cold outside. I would think it's better to be out in the gardens in the summer.
“Staying here again!”
We loved this charming hotel set in a cozy area. The room was large and fashionable and the bath was large and newly remodeled. We had the English breakfast plan and the service and quaility of food was great. We enjoyed the bar and lounge each evening. Warm fire each night was welcoming. I highly recommend this hotel and we are picky American travelers!
“An excellent place to stay”
The Hawkwell House is just outside of Oxford. A short bus ride from High Street or about a 15-20 minute walk. If you like walking, ask at the desk clerk about walking into Oxford along the river, it's not to be missed. The food in the restaurant was excellent, although dinner is served much later than most Americans are used to. This is an old hotel, and the floors creak a bit, but the rooms were very comfortable and modern. I would definitely recommended this hotel to others.
“Very comfortable hotel near Oxford”
Lovely hotel which has been recently updated. Large comfortable room with modern bathroom. Wonderful breakfast. Only setback was needing to take a taxi to town. Would definately recommend this hotel.
“Find another hotel.”
We were most disappointed with this hotel. It looked great in the online photos, but in reality it is old and tired looking. Walls and baseboards need to be painted, furnishings need to be updated, grout in the bathroom needs to be redone. Our room looked out onto the parking lot and a dumpster. We woke up at 6:00 a.m. to the sounds of a truck revving its motor for 10 minutes. We asked for another room, but management was unable to help because the hotel was fully booked due to a wedding. The best they could do was offer us a free meal. This was not as generous as it sounds because it was 9:50 p.m. and the kitchen closed at 10:00 p.m. The location of the hotel is also poor. It was a 9 - 10 pound taxi ride to the train station and a bus ride into town. I would never stay at this hotel again and am surprised that Expedia actually listed it.
“One or two slip-ups, but we'd stay there again.”
Overall we liked the place, but had two things go a bit wrong: for one, the TV did not work (was not hooked up to satellite and did not get reception over the air). For another, the room was not ready at the check-in time of 2 pm, even though the hotel clerk knew we had arrived at 10 am. At the least, I think the room should've been ready by 2, if not sooner. It was ready by about ten after 2, and only then with a mad rush by the housekeepers to do so, with us waiting down the stairs with our luggage. Other than that, we liked the place quite a bit and had no other complaints. In fact, we would probably stay there again, and assume that the above problems would either be fixed, or not occur, again. The locals is great, with Oxford easily accessible by bus ($10 for a 24 hr family pass). The breakfast was very good, and i'm told the restaurant is good as well (though we ended up eating elsewhere). I wish it had air conditioning, but that's a common absence in Euro hotels. In its favor was a terrific comforter! Loved it, wished all places had one like it. One last thing: the main window had only a thick curtain, no additional "sheer" curtain that would've let in the breeze but given some privacy. We therefore had to choose between breeze and privacy, especially at night. We chose breeze. Anyway, it's still a nice little place and we would, indeed, likely stay there again.
“Oxford's Finest”
Hawkwell House Hotel was a wonderful experience. Their staff spent time answering all of our questions and I never felt ignored. The hotel was very well maintained and they were very accommodating. We enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this hotel.
