“Perfect location”

My husband and I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights and were very pleased. When traveling to Europe you have to be prepared for the size of the rooms. This room, however, was larger than we expected. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The location was perfect. It was only several blocks from the National Theatre stop on the fly train from the airport. The breakfast was very good. There are hundreds of restaurants around the hotel and you are right in the center of Oslo and by all the public transportation. You will not be disappointed!

“Beautiful, Comfortable and Quiet”

The Scandic Edderkoppen Hotel was beautiful, spotless and quiet (I enjoy my sleep). It was very nice to see cheerful staff enjoying working with each other; very polite. The breakfast buffet, which came with my package, had a huge variety of food. Though I always had my map, the Hotel has a giant metal sculpture (looks like a cyclone) in the sqaure in front of it. I was never lost. My room was immaculate, cosy and warm. Nice hot shower (and the liquid soap, LUX, was great!). My room also had plenty of lights, very comfortable bed and flat screen TV. Pleasant surprise was using my remote control to check for messages (if any) on the TV. You can also set your wake-up call automatically from the TV (which flips on based upon your setting). My mind was put at ease by this function since I had a very early check-in going home. I was able to sleep my last night without worrying about checking my watch.

Area recommendations
The street blocks just north of Oslo University (heading north on Universitetsgata) were quieter than the areas near the main shopping (I chose the Scandic Edderkoppen for this reason).
When to go
Late spring/early fall. Since I've only been to Oslo this autumn, and the summer weather (peak season) is not too different in temperature, fall works out.
Getting there
SAS Airlines; very comfortable, good food and service.
Getting around
When arriving at Oslo Airport, get a free city map from Information, proceed over to the Flytoget machine, scan your credit card, and then proceed to the track for the 19 minute Express Train to Oslo Central Station. With the exception of taking the Ferry to Bygdoy Island, you can walk most anywhere in the city centre (and that's the fun of exploring).
What to pack
I did it right this time. Pack light! No one is taking tabs on what you are wearing each day. I good warm jacket is needed. If you are going later in the year, bring a hat and scarf.
Must see
The Royal Palace grounds, Vigeland Sculpture Park, Henrik Ibsen Musuem (a must!), Memorial Cemetery, Munch Musuem, Opera House, Icebar/Oslo (what an experience). Going to Oslo without visiting the Viking Ship Musuem and the Fram Musuem would be a shame (take the Ferry over the water).
Shopping
Near Oslo Central Station there are 2 shopping malls, plus the main Karl Johans Gate. Be sure not to ignore the shops off the main drag for good deals can be found.
Dining
I recommend selecting a package that includes breakfast with your hotel (Scandic Edderkoppen had just that...a huge spread for several hours!). Can't beat that. Lunch you can do on the go. Plenty of places for sandwiches. I found a great place (takeout/eat at counter) called Asian Express located in the square across from the National Theatre.
Nightlife
Plenty of cosy places for cocktails and conversation with tea lights galore.
Outdoors or beach
A must see is taking the Ferry (which runs regularly) for a short jaunt over to the Bygdoy Island (several musuems to see).

“would book this hotel again”

I absolutely loved Norway and Oslo and wish I had stayed longer as there was so much more I wanted to see. I was very impressed at how much English they speak. They were very helpful. Oslo was very expensive and I'm sure there were places that were cheaper than usual but we didn't know where to find them. We had lots of hot chocolate to keep us warm in between sight seeing and we thought the free map that we got from our hotel was excellent. Our hotel didn't serve hot chocolate or tea at the bar- they only served coffee as a hot drink! Which was a bit inconvenient as we had to go back out to get a hot drink as we don't like coffee and there were no tea making facilities in our room which I found a bit strange as I've not encountered that before. It was very clean and well staffed. I would definately stay in this hotel again it was spot on!

Area recommendations
We stayed in the City Centre and it was very easy to get around on foot. It was within easy reach of the train station and buses and trams were very accessible too.
Getting around
Definately but the Oslo pass for the public transport. It all came when it should and was easy to use. Tourist information next to the train station were very helpful and gave us accurate information about bus and tram times. Very impressed, much better than the service in England. Plan what you are going to do and see then you can ask tourist information all at the same time, then they can tell you what the connecting times for transport is.
What to pack
This time of year (Dec) you need plenty of warm clothes. We took snow boots, thick socks, thermals, fleeces, hats, scarves, gloves and lip balm!
Must see
Nobel Peace Centre, Royal Palace, Akershus Fortress, Viking Boat museum & the market at Aker Brigg was lovely.
Dining
Take plenty of money or share food. Norway was expensive for food and drink. Not much vegetarian options but most places did have a option. The food that we ate was lovely and the restaurants were very good and clean too.

“Best hotel”

Travel was great. Took the SAS bus and it stopped in front of the and on our way back we just had to walk for 5 minutes (Radisson Blu) to take it back. Hotel was clean, breakfast was more than enough to fill you up until mid afternoon! A good thing as food is horribly expensive. Very convenient to walk to town and around.

“Spartan at best”

Maybe it was the Scandinavian style, but our double room was very small, with no drawers nor a closet, so we had to live out of our suitcases for a week. People were very nice, buffet breakfast plentiful and restaurant food tasty. We just didn't want to spend any free moments in the room. We should have spent more to stay elsewhere. Might be best for a single traveler. It was like a dormitory room, only smaller.

Traveller's tip
All the Oslo sights or the bus/ferry to get to them were very convenient and within a short walking distance from the hotel. Norwegians are most friendly, very cordial and speak terrific English. We loved Vigeland Sculpture Park the best.

“Recommended budget hotel”

Excellent location. Within a few minutes walk of the main street, the palace, the port and Akershus fortress. I was pleased to find that the reception sold the Oslo pass. Very friendly staff. Nice breakfast. Good enough basic room and ensuite. The only downside was the bathroom wasn't as clean as I would have liked.

Traveller's tip
As Oslo is very expensive we were pleased to find the Oslo pass saved us quite a bit of money giving us free transport, free entry to museums and discounts in restaurants.

“Friendly hotel”

This hotel is well situated for all the sights of Oslo. Staff friendly and very helpful. Even allowed us to check in at 9.00am as they had a clean room ready. Good choices for breakfast. Rooms clean and functional.

Traveller's tip
Make the most of breakfast in the hotel. Food is VERY expensive. We bought an Oslo card which was vry useful. Flam museum excellent but take the time to watch the film (about an hour).
