Convenient upscale hotel next to railway station

Posted 29-Jun-2015
Pros: Location and very nice accommodations.
Cons: Add a small limited menu cafe for light evening meal.
Location: Right next to train station - and I mean Right next to! Old town York about 15 minutes walk with shopping, museums, etc.
A little pricey but worth it for the experience. Located right next to the railway station and a reasonable walk to the old town, museums and the city wall. Not a lot of choices close for eating but great for not hauling luggage etc. when traveling by train. Had a room in the 5000 series which was very nice, large and well set up. Great bed - large and firm. Staff very friendly, breakfast quite good - usual full Scottish plus extras. We usually travel more budget level but this was fun just for the experience and convenience. Impressive looking three story lobby!

We were upgraded to a superior double, which had been newly renovated. Nice room, very nice breakfast, fancy reception, lovely staff!

Nice if your travelling by train

Posted 02-Jun-2015
it's right next to the train platforms. Very convenient . And it's a short & pleasant walk to all the sites in the city. but I found it strange there's no porters at the doors to help with luggage ( had to carry up stairs ). The room was very small but clean. the room was Too hot even though the heating was off. The windows only open a little. The room was a long long way from reception: down a lift , long walk , up another lift. The cleaning staff was not friendly - no smiles or good mornings. Overall, it was ok but not for the price of $175/night. sort of a faded glory type of place that hasn't adjusted the price from the days of grandeur.

A reasonable hotel near the centre of York. I should imagine if you stay in the opulent main building it is a fabulous hotel, but if you book a 'standard' room like us, expect to be in the adjoining conference centre wing rooms overlooking the post depot, which are unremarkable and like any other standard hotel rooms you can find (but for more money). Note for parents with pushchairs or anyone in a wheel chair: hardly any disabled access to main hotel.

Convenient, clean, value for money

Posted 18-May-2015
Pros: Location, staff
Cons: Bit tired as most grand hotels of this era are
Stayed for one night only and used very little of the facilities. Would have preferred a room with a view but were allocated a family room on the basement level. Room was comfortable though and very clean. Great location for the station and easy walk into the City.

A 4-star hotel close to the old town centre

Posted 15-May-2015
Pros: Staff very helpful. A good central location with a convenient car park.
Cons: Complete the refurbishment asap but in the meantime heavily discount room charges and say what is happening.
Location: Good location near the old part of York. Within walking distance of the old town walls, the old city streets, the Minster and the railway museum.
I think the Expedia rating was very mis-leading as the hotel is undergoing a major refurbishment. The room we were offered was very tired and had a poor view over railway station. I complained and we were then offered a small room with a good view of the Minster. This was acceptable but poor value for money.

Pros: Location and dining experience.
Excellent location for walking around York. Our dinner in the dining room was exceptional! All of the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful.
