Nice hotel but bit over priced

Posted 07-Apr-2015
Pros: Grand building. Parking availability and location
Cons: Breakfast and bedding.
Location: Central location to city centre. Jorvik Viking centre, York minster and castle museum all within 5 -10 min walk. Betty's tea room -best book.
The hotel itself was very nice in its grand old building, but, I found it to be not really worth the money paid. My bed and room were very comfortable, my pillows however were very flat and hard. Personal preference I know and the hotel staff were very quick and happy to change them when requested. Breakfast was very tasty with everything you could want, however, it was buffet style. I just think that for the money paid it could've been table service. I've stayed in much cheaper hotels through my job and have had breakfast at them all with most offering this level of service. Despite this, the hotel was right in the centre of town, just 5 min walk to the very centre. Also having a door onto the station was a bonus to some guests. We drove and on site parking at a very reasonable price for our stay was ideal. Even with its door straight onto the station platform you couldn't hear any noise from trains or announcements, but we were at the front so can't speak for guests staying facing the station. Sadly, we were above the function room where a wedding was taking place one evening. The disco was quite loud but was over at a reasonable time of midnight. It didn't disturb us and we're only too happy for it to go on, but we were very tired from a long day and fell off to sleep very quickly! To sum up the whole stay.......lovely stay with staff bending over backwards to help but could be £100 less per night for same experience.

City break

Posted 22-Mar-2015
Pros: The central location of the hotel was excellent. We could park the car and walk into York.
Cons: Car parking facilities should be used for overnight guests. Day conference visitors were on car park and it was difficult to find a space during day
Location: Good central location in York. Near to Railway Museum, Jorvik Centre, city walks, restaurants, bars.
The hotel staff were pleasant. The room was clean and had a good sized bathroom.

Very good location for access to cental York

Posted 14-Mar-2015
Pros: Cleanliness, friendliness, and facilities of the hotel
Cons: Unfortunately our room was very close to the work men who were refurbing the hotel (it as noisy in the morning)
Location: Easy access to the shops bars and tourist sites
A very pleasing and relaxing experience. Both myself and wife enjoyed our stay and would rcommend this hotel to others.

noisy and poor room

Posted 09-Mar-2015
Pros: Staff very helpful and cheery.
Cons: Room required refurbishment and double glazing.
Location: Excellent location with easy access to all the attractions of York including good restaurants, shopping, the Minster, museum etc.
The staff were pretty good, breakfast excellent and service very good but the room was poor in quality and external noise kept us awake. Ill fitting window and lack of secondary glazing meant that we heard all the noise from the station including scaffolding being assembled/dismantled during the night. Stained carpet and ill fitting bed valances very noticeable. Bathroom generally clean and plenty of hot water but mouldy grouting around bath and on shower curtain let it down.

Weeks break

Posted 08-Mar-2015
Pros: Perfect location for a break in York 5-10mins walk from everything. Helpful staff generally great all round.
Cons: Redecorating underway so will improve appearance.
Location: As mentioned ideally located for all York has to offer.
A good clean hotel with friendly staff. Some building work b ring carried out in part of the hotel but we were not effected. Quiet clean comfortable room. Food was excellent in the Tempus bar. Pool was small but ideal after a day walking around York.

Elegant hotel next to the train station

Posted 23-Feb-2015
Pros: The location; the impressive entrance hall; the pool / leisure facilities.
Cons: The room decor. Seemed a bit ordinary and underwhelming for the price - and by comparison with the rest of the hotel.
Location: Access to the City Wall just across the road. Ten minutes' walk to the Minster and all the shops and restaurants of the historic old City.
My son and I enjoyed a lovely stay in the Royal York Hotel over February half term. The communal areas of the hotel are very impressive, in particular the reception lobby with the imposing staircase. Our room, however, was a little bit tired and could benefit from being spruced up a bit. Very comfortable bed, though, and good bathroom. The pool in the hotel (with jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and adjacent gym) was a definite bonus. We had a 'room only' deal but £10 for breakfast (£5 for a child) was a bit steep (although the choice was excellent) and we decamped to try out the many many nearby cafes and eateries on the other mornings.

Pros: Convenience for both the city and railway
Cons: see experience
Location: would go back again, but probably try a different hotal
Booked for a weekend break and convenience for the railway station. Ok enough but showing signs around the edges of needing some internal investment into the rooms (dado rails removed and walls in a poor state as a result, cobwebs in the room. Initial impact was we'd been given one of the lower rated rooms to reflect the price paid through the offer.

Great weekend stay

Posted 07-Feb-2015
Pros: Distance for the station and the railway museum. The elegance of its decor and friendly staff.
Cons: The shower.
Location: Immediately outside the impressive York station and outside the city wall. Easy walk from the town centre and the National Railway Museum.
Immediately outside York station with plenty of eating and drinking places a short walk away. The rooms we had were comfortable and warm. The beds were very soft and warm. My only complaint is the fixed 80s shower head in the bath and the time it took for hot water to get to it and the other taps. The rest of the hotel is extremely clean and elegant. The staff were polite and very helpful. We finished every day with a few drinks in the York Tap, a real ale bar on the station immediately opposite the Hotels station enterance. We got there before we could enter the rooms but the hotel had a secure luggage store which we made free use of that day and on the day we left on an evening train.
