Convenient, clean, value for money

Posted 18-May-2015
Pros: Location, staff
Cons: Bit tired as most grand hotels of this era are
Stayed for one night only and used very little of the facilities. Would have preferred a room with a view but were allocated a family room on the basement level. Room was comfortable though and very clean. Great location for the station and easy walk into the City.

A 4-star hotel close to the old town centre

Posted 15-May-2015
Pros: Staff very helpful. A good central location with a convenient car park.
Cons: Complete the refurbishment asap but in the meantime heavily discount room charges and say what is happening.
Location: Good location near the old part of York. Within walking distance of the old town walls, the old city streets, the Minster and the railway museum.
I think the Expedia rating was very mis-leading as the hotel is undergoing a major refurbishment. The room we were offered was very tired and had a poor view over railway station. I complained and we were then offered a small room with a good view of the Minster. This was acceptable but poor value for money.

Pros: Location and dining experience.
Excellent location for walking around York. Our dinner in the dining room was exceptional! All of the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful.

Pros: Staff were all very pleasant and helpful
Cons: Better tea and coffee making facilities Fridges in rooms
Location: Good location for city centre and other attractions
This hotel was very disappointing it needs a lot of money spending on its decor, furnishings and carpets . In the hotel reception there was a strong smell of chlorine coming from the swimming pool in the basement. We also felt it was very expensive (we paid £12.50 for 1 glass of wine and a small bottle of water) Advertising pictures of hotel are very deceiving - the hotel may have looked like that many years ago - but doesn't look like that now

Great city break in an ideal location.

Posted 22-Apr-2015
Pros: Next to the main railway station it took only moments from leaving the train to getting all booked in. Reception staff very friendly and helpful.
Cons: Lighting in the bedroom - My wife had to move into the bathroom to do her make up as too dim by the mirror in the bedroom.
Location: Adjacent to the main railway station and within a 15 minutes walk of all the main sites - The Minster, The Shambles, Railway Museum and more.
Lovely hotel in easy walking distance of all the main sites. Perfect location for our short Easter break. Our room overlooked the gardens and we could see York Minster in the distance. A perfect view. The City tour bus stops right outside the hotel and was a great way to see the main sites and pinpoint locations - but after that it was easy to walk into the main town and then return to sit in the bar or have a meal in the main restaurant. Leisure facilities are a great bonus and are well kept and easy to access. Lots to do in York and as well as the Minster, Railway Museum and the pubs along the River Ouse, we thoroughly recommend the Castle Museum. Overall a great week away and we would recommend this hotel to others looking for a smart hotel with attentive and friendly staff in a super location.

Hotel living on reputation. Staff extremely helpful but does not compensate for the overall condition of the hotel.

Downturn in quality of breakfast.

Posted 19-Apr-2015
Pros: Conveniently situated and the rooms are quiet. Welcoming staff as always.
Cons: Re-furbishment (understand this is being done) Hot food at breakfast and a better brand of coffee as our coffee was stewed, not hot and bitter.
Location: General history and shopping.
The room was good except curtains were fitted too far away from the wall. No blind at the window which would have solved this problem We were awoken by bright sunlight from the edges and top of the window too early in the morning. The breakfast was really disappointing. Most of it was cold or just warm. Awful coffee tepid and bitter to taste. The staff were, as always, friendly and efficient. Excellent dealings with the Manager on our complaint. but it was important to the staff they ask why we were not happy de

Nice hotel, good for vacation

Posted 19-Apr-2015
Pros: Parking, lift, air conditioning.
Cons: Open the Japanese restaurant each day.
Location: On/off bus, rail museum, Jorvik Centre, Shambles, Minster .....
My wife, son and I stayed two nights and were three weeks into our travels so we had plenty of bags and high expectations. Reception service was good, parking good and a lift to take bags. Handy to all attractions and railway station. We thought it may be noisy but no problems. One major plus for a large hotel - the air conditioner worked! We didn't eat at the hotel so no comment re food.
