"We truly enjoyed our stay at Hu Hotel. We wanted to be close enough to walk to Beale St and far enough away. It was absolutely the perfect location. Very quiet , rooms were clean and staff was very nice and helpful! The only issue we had was ice. You had to ask for ice on the first floor. Not a huge complaint. Just a little inconvenience. But would definitely recommend and stay here again. "

Pocket Guides: Independent Hotels in Memphis

Independent Hotels in Memphis

Stay in an independent hotel in downtown Memphis, in the naval station suburb of Millington to the north, or in the area around Memphis International Airport to the south.

Choose from upmarket four-star boutique accommodation and fancy hotels set in historic buildings or great value budget motels with parking for cars, RVs and trucks.

Explore Memphis from an Independent Hotel

Away from the city centre, particularly around Memphis International Airport, there’s a good choice of one- and two-star independent suites, inns and hotels – perfect for a quick overnight stay before an early morning flight.

But even at the budget hotels, you can make use of free WiFi, self-parking and in-room microwaves and refrigerators. Some of the Memphis independent hotels near the airport also have on-site coffee shops or cafes, complimentary breakfast and laundry facilities.

Things to Do in Memphis

If you’re in Memphis for the music, you’ll have a lot to choose from. Join one of the many tours that show you all the big landmarks, or be independent and make your own way to the tiny Sun Studio recording studio, the Gibson Guitar factory, the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.

Then there’s the biggest musical attraction of all – Graceland – where you can take a self-guided audio stroll around Elvis Presley’s former mansion, before checking out his over-the-top collection of luxury automobiles and private jets, over the road.

If you’d rather learn about the culture and history of Memphis, there is plenty to see. The atmospheric South Main and Victorian Village historic districts offer great insight into Memphis’s past, as does the impressive National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel, where evocative exhibits bring the story of the civil rights movement to life.

In the evening, head to the entertainment district of Beale Street for some traditional seafood gumbo and the sultry sound of the blues before heading back to your independent hotel nearby.
