“Excellent anniversary!”

We stayed for two nights on a trip to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. The flowers delivered to the hotel had made it to our room, along with a compimentary bottle of bubbly and card from the hotel. The room was a reasonable size for a central London hotel and its wooden shutters were excellent - definitely helping us sleep in each morning! Breakfast was an extensive buffet - and served until 1030 (obviously mindful of the effect of the blackout shutters!) It was of a decent standard for a hotel of its size. The staff were all professional and friendly. The hotel was ideally located; it would be hard to find a better location for sightseeing around London. It was also easy to get to and from the O2 and within very easy walking distance of Covent Garden. We've stayed in better hotels but for the price we paid you couldn't top the experience or location.

“Met Expectations - Very Well!”

Location was perfect for the end of a business trip to the UK. Walk out the front door & its all there. The Savoy across the road, Covent Garden up the road. Room small & clean.

“Visit”

The Strand Palace is well located and the service is decent but not outstanding. When I first arrived there was a queque of 15 of so people waiting to get checked in. The desk staff were useless. It was only when customers started to get a little agitated that they roused themselves and got others to support them. This was very average. For price and location the hotel makes sense, but it is not the hight of luxury and is very, very crowded.

“Fantasic Location”

We had tickets for a concert at the Southbank centre and we walked to and from the venue. Fantastic sights on the way - Big Ben , Gerkin etc The hotel was clean tidy all the staff were very helpful, Took a sharp intake of breath at the bar bill ! Drink elsewhere! Plenty of places to eat , theatres, tube - what more could you want ! Highly recommended.

“Lovely hotel, great stay”

Had 2 nights at this hotel mid November 2011. The room and bathroom was lovely and clean. The bed is the most comfortable bed I have every slept in. Room 511, luxury twin. Slap bang in the middle of the Strand, easy for Covent Garden, the City and West End. Excellent location. Breakfast choices were superb! Lots to choose from, nothing ran out, everything was delicious. Drawback for me is I don't sleep well with traffic noise. My room was on the side of the hotel, but I am sensitive to the traffic noise, so that was my problem not the hotels. The room had wooden shutters to cover the windows to keep the light out. These were wonderful. My own fault, I forgot to ask for a room at the back of the hotel. If traffic keeps you awake ask for a room at the back of the hotel. Otherwise I would highly recommend this hotel.

Area recommendations
Bloomsbury and the City are excellent areas to explore at the weekend as they are quieter than on weekdays. The West End is The Place if you want to shop til you drop. There are discount theatre ticket booths around Leicester Square where you can get same night tickets cheaper if you fancy a spur of the moment show.
Getting around
Getting a visitor Oyster Card is the best deal. Please remember though that you must check it in at the start of your journey and check it out when you disembark at the end of your journey. This applies to tubes and trains but not buses. If you do not check your Oyster card out at the end of your journey you will be charged the maximum price for one day's travel! Visitor Oyster cards can be bought online and you can choose how much money you put on it. It's easy to order and is delivered quickly. I was very pleased with my experience of purchasing it. They are easy to top up during your visit and save pounds on travel on the tube, train and bus.
What to pack
Flat comfortable shoes are a must in London. If you are going out for the evening don't feel that you have to rush back to change into some fancy evening wear. Londoners have no choice but to go out straight from work. There are more people in every day wear on evenings out than all dressed up. Obviously if you like to dress up that is your choice, but I would say don't stress about bringing all kinds of fancy outfits. Smart casual works everywhere in London and the most important thing is to keep your feet as happy as you can while tramping around sightseeing.
