Explore the intriguing Baroque buildings of this immense hilltop fortress, visit its museums and admire the panoramic views of the city below.

Standing atop a hill on the western side of the Main River, the Fortress Marienberg is the city’s most iconic landmark. This emblem of Wuerzburg is comprised of many Baroque buildings that once housed the prince-bishops and now contain two museums. Wander through this vast complex for a glimpse into the enchanting history of the Franconia region.

The large site is visible in the Wuerzburg skyline from most parts of the city centre. Stroll along the nearby Alte Mainbruecke bridge on the Main River and capture photos of this spectacular fortress to the southwest. It is surrounded by trees and has large defensive walls built into the hillside. See how it lights up at night and dwarfs the surrounding area.

Enter the site and admire the design of its structures, some of which date back to the 13th century. Embark on a guided tour in English for a comprehensive understanding of the architecture and history of the site. It was expanded several times between the 17th and 19th centuries, with Renaissance and Baroque touches.

See highlights such as the Princes’ Garden near the castle courtyard. Enjoy the spectacular city view from this landscaped terrace garden full of sculptures and floral arrays. Gaze up at the 18th-century four-story Maschikuli Tower.

Visit the Mainfraenkisches Museum for its excellent array of art from the region of Franconia. It includes a collection of sculptures and some prehistoric items. Go to the Fuerstenbaumuseum in the complex’s east wing to learn about the castle’s history. It contains the former living quarters of the prince-bishops and a display dedicated to the development of Wuerzburg.

Guided tours are available except in winter. There is a fee for the tour and access to the museums. The Princes’ Building opens daily Tuesday through Sunday and is closed in winter, while other structures remain open year-round.

The Fortress Marienberg is separated from the rest of Wuerzburg’s historic centre by the Main River. Walk here from the Wuerzburg Cathedral in about 20 minutes. Visit nearby attractions, such as the Botanical Gardens, the Wallfahrtskirche Kaeppele chapel and the Alte Mainbruecke bridge.
