“A great old hotel in the heart of Cheyenne”

My wife and I love old hotels and B&B's. The Plains Hotel didn't disappoint. The room was clean and comfortable. We had dinner in the lobby bar and grill and the steaks were excellent. Our only complaint, and the reason we rated the holel service a "3", was the 25-30 minutes it took to check-in after arriving. With only one registration person trying to answer phones, take reservations and check-in arrriving guests, the length of time it took to check in was annoying. Street only parking could be a hassel during the week, but on a Saturday night we didn't have a problem. We would definitely stay at the Plains Hotel again.

Dining
For a great breakfast in an authentic old diner, and a little of the local flavor, head to the Luxory Diner about a mile down the road west of the Plains Hotel.

“Not impressed”

I was expecting a lot more for the price. Parking was two blocks away; the hotel sign was not quite visible. The room was very small with the sink in the bedroom area. There was a curtain on the window that snagged the bathroom door each time you used the bathroom. I would try a larger chain hotel if I were to visit the Cheyenne area again.

“Fun Hotel in the Wild West”

Stayed here for one night. Checked in late and was promptly greeted and given my room. Hotel has a unique charm to it. Would have liked to stay longer if I had the time. The only downside is that parking is on the street and is only 2 hours from 8am to 5pm. Had to park about a block away and walk with my luggage and things. Overall, I highly recommend it.

“Very impressed”

It was really a treat to stay in a true hotel that is not your typical cookie cutter motel. This is an older hotel that has been refurbished and is very warm and inviting. I thought the bed was excellent but hubby though it was a little to hard. It wasn't. It has a very nice resturant although one time the service was a little slow but still very good. The rooms were not very big but seemed just right. Also had a fridge and a microwave. Very nice and they were very sensitive to the fact that we were there to be with a family member who was very ill and the let us check in at 4:30am. We had been on the road for about 12 hours and then had spent some time at the hospital. We needed a little down time and they were very gracious about letting us check in at an unusual time, which it didn't seem any of the chains were willing to work with us. Also very centrally located in Cheyenne so we could walk around and shop, eat or whatever. There is also an excellent Mexican resturant about half a mile east. Great food there. So if you want a hotel that has character, and class, give the Plains a try.

“Cheyenne--live steam”

If you're a railroad buff, you know that Cheyenne is home to a large Union Pacific rail yard. The historic station is amazingly large and elaborate for what is really a pretty small city. The fact that they keep a few steam locomotives there, and they get them out for exercise now and again is an added bonus. I found that out quite by accident when I heard the unmistakeable sound of a steam whistle as I was sitting in the depot plaza recently The area around the depot is well populated by shops and restaurants in historic buildings. I chose to stay in the Historic Plains Hotel, and enjoyed a view of the plaza as well as the ambience of a throwback to the past. If you want high-end luxe, look elsewhere. If you find the chains to be all too, well, chains, this is a great find. Downtown Cheyenne and the Historic Plains Hotel reinforce the good reasons to get off the Interstate and check out what's local and historic.

Area recommendations
Downtown Cheyenne has everything you'll need, unless you're hooked on the chain restaurants and hotels. At night, it was farly busy and felt completely safe to walk around. Traffic hasn't found it's way here yet.

“Fun Historic Experience”

The hotel was very nice, bathroom was a little old and we had to ask how to turn on the showerhead. The coffee shop was wonderful and the lobby atmosphere was very fun!

“never again....”

terrible experience. besides the lack of on site parking, room was small, there was hot water half the time, front desk would not answer the phone, and the area was noisy most of the night.

Comment from the hotel's management
Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding your recent experience and the complications you had with parking, the delay for hot water, the front desk, and noise from the city. We are working to resolve these issues in cooperation with the City of Cheyenne as well as taking action to improve the hot water delay. We understand how these inconveniences are unsatisfactory and have made your stay with us uncomfortable. Our goal is to maintain satisfied guests and we thank you for letting us know about these problems so that we can prevent the same experience for you and other future guests.

“Disappointed in the city; not the hotel”

The hotel was quaint. The city wasn't what I expected; therefore, a little disappointed. They've done well to refurbish and maintain the antiquity of the hotel.

Comment from the hotel's management
Thank you for your kind review of our hotel. We apologize for your disappointment with the City of Cheyenne. The Downtown Development Authority in Cheyenne is working to revitalize downtown Cheyenne and although many improvements have been made, there are more to come. We hope that all of our guests view the Historic Plains Hotel as Cheyenne’s iconic crown jewel and have served guests for more than 100 years and that the City of Cheyenne will follow our lead to improve downtown Cheyenne.

“Old and very dark and dank”

A old hotel with a very nice lobby. We had stopped by here last year and ask to see a typical room. Apparentl they showed us a suite because the room had when we stayed here was of very low quality. Bad neighborhood at night also.

Area recommendations
No parking provided in a downtown area other than 3 blocks away. So, park on the street where you are surrounded by night clubs and drunks. Dangerous at night.
Comment from the hotel's management
Thank you for reviewing our hotel on Expedia. The Historic Plains Hotel is more than 100 years old and was renovated in 2003. As a historic property, our room types and sizes vary and we hope that this adds to the charm and uniqueness of the property. Cheyenne, Wyoming has one of the lowest crime rates in the country, but like any downtown area it has character. We hope that the next time you visit Cheyenne, you will stay in one of our suites since they truly are an upgrade to our classic rooms. In the meantime, we will pass your feedback regarding the downtown neighborhood along to the City of Cheyenne as well.
