“Close to everything”

Just around the corner from Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City. Rail system very easy to use.

Area recommendations
I couldn't fault the area we stayed. It is such a huge city and would be difficult to recommend anywhere else.
When to go
We were there in Nov 2011 and it was quite cold. So rug up.
Getting around
Subway very easy, quick, cheap, crowded. Taxis
Must see
Of course, The Great Wall, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Sq.
Shopping
Pearl City and Silk Market for bargains.

“Nice Hotel Close to Subway Line to Beijing South Railway Station”

This was a nice hotel, especially for the price. Take the #4 Metro line north two or three stops from Beijing South Railway and then when you get to street level, walk about 3 or 4 blocks to the right. DO NOT TAKE A TAXI FROM BEIJING SOUTH RAILWAY OR YOU WILL BE WAITING FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! We had difficulty finding it at night, but that's just because we didn't walk far enough. The hotel is nice enough. Breakfast buffet was included with a lot of western and chinese choices. We also ate there for lunch and had a great burger and fries, and went back for the dinner buffet which was delicious and had free WINE as part of the buffet. Pool, hot tub, weight room, sauna, steam room were all nice additions on the bottom floor.

Area recommendations
We were only there for a short weekend (really only a day) to go to the Great Wall. Don't be fooled by websites that tell you the easiest and most convenient way to get to the wall is by a train from Beijing North Railway Station. We tried that and no one at the train station spoke English or knew what we were talking about. We finally spoke with the travel person at the hotel, and they set us up with a private car to take us out to the wall. That's the ONLY way to go.

“Great place to stay”

Nice hotel. It was within easy walking distance of a subway station and shopping center. An English speaking staff member was always available. The beds were rather hard, but I slept well. The room was clean. They exchanged my US dollars for Chinese currency at a good rate.

Area recommendations
Xidan and Wangfujing are good, upper class shopping areas. Of course, you can't miss Forbidden City and Tienanmen Square.
Getting around
The subway system has signs in English and can get you to many of the important areas in metropolitan Beijing for about 30 cents for a one-way ticket.
Must see
Forbidden City, Great Wall, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven
Events and shows
The acrobatics show I saw was incredible.
Other
Take toilet paper and hand sanitizer with you whenever you go out. They are often not provided in public restrooms.

“Location is good, but hotel room condition is not as great for a 4 star. (Overpaid)”

I would recommend the hotel for people who want to be 'close' to the city especially around the shopping area. As for the hotel itself, I felt it only deserves a 3 star and it is slightly overpriced. The service however is good and the reception personnel can speak decent English. On the last day of the trip, we have arranged for the hotel to call up a taxi for us to bring us to the airport. The taxi service itself however was bad. The taxi driver took us for 5 minutes before receiving another call which offered him a better deal for a different service. We ended up switching to another taxi and we had to forcefully requested for him to find us a replacement taxi.

“A pleasant stay at the Mercure”

Situated on the main street where a 15 minute walk will take you straight into the heart of Xidan, the hotel could not be anymore conveniently located. Xidan iteself is a viabrant area where a lot of the younger generation go to shop. Go behind the main street and you'll find plenty more. The subway is less than 10 minutes away from the hotel which will help you get from one end of the city to the other. The hotel staff provide warm hospitality and are approachable. Definitely recommendable and will look forward to staying there again.

“My child and I had a good experience at Mercure”

My 10-year old child and myself stayed in the Mercure at Xidan in Beijing for 4 - 5 days. We liked the hotel for a number of reasons, including: 1. Location - at the Xidan shopping center, close to Tiananmen, with subway and access to both Xidan and Xuanwumen. 2. Swimming pool - their indoor swimming pool is 20 - 25 meters, not crowded, a good facility for do some exercise and cool down for a hot summer day. Quite a few other hotels claim they have a pool, but this is the only one that showed a phot of the pool. That was important to us. 3. Western style operation - this makes it not much different than staying in any other 4-start hotel in the states. Their staff and service are very professional. The staff makes great effort to help us. Some one would go out to the street to get a taxi for us if there are not enough at the front door.

Traveller's tip
1. Convenience to bus and two subway station - all within 3 minutes walk. 2. The indoor swimming pool is a huge plus for people with kids, especially during the summer. 3. Good location make it relatively easy to go anywhere. 4. Staff is very professional.

“Nice hotel for the price”

The hotel is about 5-10 minutes to the forbidden city. Easy walk to the subway. Free wireless in the lobby only. The rooms need some update. The room was ok; the bathroom was decently clean (for a four star hotel; the bathroom should be really clean)Standard beds for China (a bit hard) Employees helpful and friendly. The breakfast is worth it; many options!

Traveller's tip
Taxis are cheap in China; but subway is faster and cheaper especially in rush hour.
