The Arena della Stretto open-air theatre has a dramatic setting on Reggio di Calabria’s waterfront, overlooking the sparkling Strait of Messina. Book tickets for a performance and arrive early to soak up the panoramic views, which on a clear day, extend all the way to Sicily. Try to spot the smouldering tip of Mount Etna in the distance.
The arena, which is officially known as L’Anfiteatro Senatore Ciccio Franco, takes its name from a local 20th-century senator and political activist. The arena was built on the site of the old Porto Salvo pier, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1908. Look for the statue of Athena, part of a monument dedicated to the former King of Italy Vittorio Emanuele III, behind the stage. This monument once stood on the Porto Salvo pier.

Arena dello Stretto is located on the Lungomare Falcomatà seafront promenade. Several festivals, including the Reggio Calabria Film Fest and the Mediterraneo Dance Festival are held at the venue.
