"An Oasis of Calm and Relaxation in a Vibrant City"
My wife and I went online, completely separately, to pick a hotel to stay for a week in George Town. We both picked the Yeng Keng. Good karma to start! The Yeng Keng exceeded our expectations. It's a beautiful small hotel, scrupulously maintained.
More than anything, it's the staff that makes this place special. Friendly, kind, and helpful beyond compare. They secured play tickets for us when online purchasing didn't work...and I paid them when we got there. Yeoh even went out on her scooter and got our cell phone fixed. Jacky, Martin, Yeoh, Priya, Yanthi, Narzul, IZ, and all the others were the consummate hosts. The location is perfect for exploring the heritage area on foot. All kinds of food are just steps away.
Other reviews said the rooms were small. They're not huge by U.S. standards, but more than adequate if you want to shower, change your clothes, write at the desk and sleep. What more do you really need. The courtyard is a nice place to sit with a cold beverage, near a fan, and watch the world go by. If you want quieter there's small, intimate seating areas throughout this 20 room hotel. Or sit by the small, serene pool in the back of the property. The cafe has good food, though I could wish for some changes in the breakfast (included) items over a week.
There are larger hotels in George Town (we went in some) and I'm sure fancier. I wouldn't stay anywhere else but the Yeng Keng if I was coming to Penang again...and I sure hope to!
