Oppdal is an area in the county of Sør-Trøndelag which consists of three mountainous areas separated by valleys. Until the beginning of the 1900s, the place was a purely agricultural society. Agriculture is still a big industry here, but other industries have also flourished. Today, the Minera slate company is Oppdal’s largest business.
At the Oppdal Rural Museum (Oppdal bygdemuseum), you can see how farm life developed from the 1500s to the middle of the 1900s. If you enjoy swimming, then the swimming facilities of the Culture House (Kulturhuset) – with its slides, climbing walls, children’s pool, hot tub and saunas – are for you. Oppdal also offers great hiking opportunities with the Dovre Mountain to the south and the Trollheimen mountainous area to the north-west. In the Dovre Mountain National Park (Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjellanasjonalpark), you can even get up close to the musk oxen.
In Oppdal, you can also try out activities such as canyoneering, rafting and zip-lining. Or how about taking the gondola lift to the Skjørstadhovden summit, which is located almost 3,700 feet above sea level? There are also many fantastic restaurants in Oppdal.
When travelling to Oppdal, you can use the Dovrebanen train line or the E6 motorway, which link Southern and Northern Norway together. About an hour’s drive away is Værnes Airport in Trondheim, Oppdal’s nearest airport. There are also various bus routes going through Oppdal.
