France's southernmost town is also one of its most sublime: Bonifacio, which is partly perched on tall cliffs, is a Corsican gem.

Situated on the southern tip of Corsica, opposite Sardinia, this town, which was built as an impregnable fortress, harmoniously combines a rich history, a relaxed atmosphere, distinctive scenery and heavenly beaches.

The town is dominated by a majestic mediaeval citadel, which proudly overlooks the Strait of Bonifacio, sitting atop stunning limestone cliffs. You can explore the maze of perfectly preserved streets and steps to discover sites that offer staggering views over the coast, such as the cimetière des marins, with its distinctive atmosphere of tranquillity, and the impressive escalier du roi d'Aragon, whose 187 steps are hewn out of the cliff face itself.

To relax, head back down to the port, where a variety of shops, bars and restaurants can be found. You can try some of the delicious local specialities while watching the luxury yachts in the narrow entrance to the port. Once you've sated your appetite, you can take a boat ride to get a better view of the impressive cliffs, go inside the caves and sail south to the fantastic Lavezzi Islands.

Bonifacio also offers breathtaking beaches all over the southern tip of Corsica. Some of these sandy beaches, which are surrounded by coves and calanques, are very popular with water sports enthusiasts, such as the beaches of Tonnara and Maora, where the strong wind is perfect for windsurfing or kitesurfing. If you'd rather just relax in peace, you'll have no problem finding a quiet spot with white sand and turquoise sea all to yourself.

Bonifacio can be reached by air via Figari South Corsica Airport, which is around 12 miles from the town centre, as well as by boat via the port of Porto-Vecchio. Once in Corsica, the best way to get around is to hire a car, so you can explore the lavish scenery at your own pace.
