Disappointing Stay – Certainly Not as Advertised
Unfortunately, my stay at the Mercure Hotel in Cardiff was disappointing and fell well below expectations.
To start with, check-in took longer than it should have, which wasn’t a great first impression.
The gym facilities were extremely basic and poorly maintained. The treadmill had visible rips in both the belt and handles, while the cable machine had handles that had been taped up. Not only does this look unprofessional, but it also raises concerns about the maintenance and safety of the equipment.
The room itself was also disappointing. The lighting was extremely poor, making the room feel dark and uninviting. To make matters worse, the heating didn’t work properly and remained at one temperature regardless of the settings. I raised this with reception when checking out, only to receive a rather dismissive response of, “OK, we will look into it.” There was no apology or genuine concern shown.
There were also maintenance staff hanging around the reception area, which didn’t give a particularly professional impression. Plates and takeaway rubbish had been left outside rooms in the corridors, making the hotel feel untidy and poorly managed.
Breakfast was mediocre at best, with nothing particularly impressive about the quality or selection.
Overall, the hotel looks considerably better in the promotional photographs than it does in reality. The facilities are tired, the rooms need attention, and cleanliness, general presen

8/10 Very good! (1,001 reviews)
The Hotel is well located and easy to reach by car and an easy walk into city centre. The car park is a bonus, but very expensive! Our room was fairly sizeable for a group of 3. But the amount of tea and coffee provided needs to be improved. The bathroom, although fairly clean, was dated and in poor repair in some areas. The power of the shower was very poor, but the bath was excellent. Pool was lovely as was the steam room, sauna and jaquzzi, but was crowded at times due to half term holidays. No staff monitoring! In general a good stay, but the parking charges might put me off staying again
