The room was clean, but that’s about it. The main issue is the disconnect between how this hotel is advertised and what it actually is. It’s a fine, middle of the road 3 star with a decent view (ish) and uncomfortable beds, and a number of other annoying but minor flaws. It is not a five star or anything close to that. There is just no objective reality to that claim. The experience made me question the reliability of hotels.com’s system for rating and ensuring accuracy. For a mid to low 3 star it was fine. If you compare it to any reputable 5 star or even 4 star it’s a very disappointing experience.

Fantastic in every way! Property was very clean. Breakfast was perfect, staff were very helpful and friendly. Loved walking to town to shop and for restaurants. I would love to stay again!

This hotel is absolutely outstanding! There is literally nothing to fault at all about this hotel. Food is incredible and the staff are all fantastic. Big shout out to the waiting staff in the restaurants who were so incredibly attentive. Love Lyttos Mare, second holiday there and hope to go again in the future.

Loved the pool. The villa was really clean and bright. You do need to check into the actual hotel (which this is not, this is the villas), which is like 5-10 mins away by car, and I'll say this now that the hotel does have a restaurant. It was nice that when requested, they quickly delivered an iron and ironing board since it wasn't already inside our villa. The whole property was really clean and well maintained. The view from our villa was nice. The villa does have a steam shower which was nice. It had two bathrooms, one with the bedroom and one downstairs. It had its own dedicated parking spot for our rental car, dishware for cooking, a washer (no dryer), microwave, and a nice refrigerator/freezer. Couple of minor gripes and preferences were that the furniture was really basic and hard plastic so the seating was not comfortable. The wifi was pretty fast (broadband) but extremely high latency (ping) (700+ ms) for those who care about things like that. One of the gripes we had was that there is allegedly "room service" as they leave you food/drink/wine menus in your room and the phone has a room service button, yet if you want to order food, they will make it in their restaurant located at their hotel as previously mentioned and they do not deliver it... so it makes it pointless room service. Overall it was a nice villa, it was pretty quiet, and not too far away from old town Chania (10-15mins).

Severe health and hygiene issues - confirmed bedbugs. We experienced a severe hygiene issue during our stay at this property. Within the first 48 hours, my husband began developing severe bite marks. We notified the front desk immediately to request a deep clean and fresh bedding, but the issue was dismissed as local outdoor bug bites. Despite thoroughly checking the room initially and finding nothing, we later discovered a dead bedbug under the covers. We have photographic documentation of both the insect and the daily bite patterns. Other guests have noted similar experiences in past reviews. Travelers should exercise caution when booking this location.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay, but there are two things I wish I had known before booking. First, avoid the restaurant directly outside the hotel entrance. They were extremely pushy and approached us as soon as we arrived, knowing travelers are tired and hungry after checking in. We decided to eat there and immediately regretted it. The prices were far higher than anywhere else nearby. They charged €12 for a beer, while restaurants literally next door were charging around €7, and another nearby was about €5. We also ordered a small salad that was about the size of a kid’s portion, and it cost €30. A gyro sandwich that typically costs around €7 elsewhere was €40 there. There are plenty of much better restaurants within a short walk, so don’t feel pressured to eat at the first place you see. Second, if you’re booking for a family or group, make sure you carefully check the room layout on the hotel’s website. We booked a room for four people (my wife, our two kids, and me), expecting a larger family room based on the photos. Instead, it was essentially a standard room with two large beds squeezed into it. The room was so cramped that the beds were almost touching, and we had to turn sideways just to walk between them. We couldn’t even fully open the balcony door because there wasn’t enough space. If you’re expecting a room that’s significantly larger than the standard rooms, double-check exactly what you’re reserving.
