Was ok. Peaceful location but huge gravel car park directly in front of ground floor rooms was noisy in morning and evening. Stale smell inside the hotel in general. Staff were overly “formal / professional” - felt almost awkward at times and didnt feel friendly. Hot breakfast for £25 not good value, continental breakfast at £17 also not good value (yoghurt, granola, canned fruit and watermelon). Good bedding, comfortable beds, but at this price I would not return.

Communication and response time with this host was top notch! We had a lot going on before arriving from overseas and forgot to notify in advance with when we wanted to be checked in as there is no onsite check-in. Messaged the host and they responded within minutes with check-in details so we were able to check in without delay. The room was mostly quite clean - did notice a few smeary light switches that maybe could have used a wipe. Also, the bathroom door latch could have used some attention but overall it was good. One other note about the sliding bathroom door - it was very heavy and at times incredibly hard to slide open and closed. It took both hands and most of my strength to move it each time. Unsure if this was a design flaw or a maintenance issue that could be addressed. But overall this was a great place to stay and we would absolutely stay here again. The location couldn’t have been better. It is RIGHT in the heart of things, which also meant Friday night was quite loud outside until about 3am but we could have anticipated that given the location. Bring along some earplugs and you’ll be fine. Didn’t end up using the in-suite laundry but it would have been convenient. Kitchen was well-equipped with a microwave, stove/oven, fridge, and toaster etc. Luggage storage post-checkout was a handy perk and saved us from having to drag our luggage all about before we were prepared to head to the train station. Would absolutely stay here again!

Had an amazing overnight stay at Mar Hall for my wife’s 50th birthday. All staff couldn’t be nicer and the place was stunning.

First of all - there’s a £50 holding charge required on check in. This would have been really helpful to have known about prior to arrival. I might have missed it during the booking process but I definitely didn’t know about this until I saw the sign at check in. The hotel is fine. I can’t say I would pay so much to stay here again. The shower in the room was incredibly small. I awoke in the middle of the night to find that the bed had separated and there was a big gap in the mattresses which wasn’t great - I didn’t sleep very well. Breakfast was fine - pretty standard. In the middle of service we spotted a staff member refilling the fresh orange jug with the 1.60 cartoon of juice from the newsagent, which we found quite funny. Receptionist was nice, I didn’t catch her name unfortunately. Did not get such a nice vibe from other staff members. On return from breakfast, a cleaner was sitting on the carpet in the hall on her phone. It felt like she was waiting for us to leave and it was kinda odd that she felt she had to do that right outside our door instead of somewhere comfortable- especially because we still had time before checkout. Reasonable level of cleanliness but maybe needs so minor updating? A hand rail on the wall of the stairs would be helpful. I just expected more for the price paid from a hotel that is so well reviewed.

The hotel has the best views over Portpatrick and the bay. The bedroom was spacious but tired, needing some TLC. The reception, bar and sitting areas are nice as is the outdoor sitting area. The breakfast room is in a grand room but I felt the breakfast itself was mediocre. A nice stay but I wouldn’t rush back.

Room itself was clean and fresh. Maybe need more hanging hooks for jackets etc and bathrooms need a rail or hooks for towels. Room was very small for us as a couple having to squeeze past one another getting ready. Staff very friendly and decor lovely and non corporate. The entrance and lifts were grubby and smelly - I would unlikely return due to the entrance and lifts. Do not understand paying a £50 deposit on arrival - booked through Hotels.com and had paid prior to arrival - maybe says more about their expected clientele and was big negative for me for solely the principal.
