Undulating green hills overlook the harbour and fortress of the coast, while a park transports you to a land of giant statues.
A great range of traditional villages and a pair of islets make up the Zhongzheng district of Keelung City. Its leafy parks and hilly lookout points create a scenic destination, while the temples and forts trace the region’s rich history. Stroll along the coastal avenues and admire the views of the East China Sea.
Arrive at the Port of Keelung and stroll along the pier. Look back on the lush green hills of the city, where a Hollywood-esque Keelung sign stands. Several blocks inland is historic Ershawan Fort, which was built in 1840 during the Qing era. Inspect the gun emplacement that protected the harbour in the past.
Take your family to the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology, which has an innovative slanted architectural design. The little ones will enjoy the Kid’s Exploration Zone and the Deep Sea Theatre.
Head west to extraordinary Zhongzheng Park, which is dotted with large and colourful sculptures. Among the highlights is the Statue of Guanyin, which stands 82 feet (25 metres) tall.
In the north of Zhongzheng, cross the Heping Bridge to reach Heping Island, which has a park and the Heping Tianxian Temple. Head east to serene Badouzi Seaside Park and bring your camera to the Wangyougu Lookout by the water.
Zhongzheng is in the northeastern outskirts of Keelung City. Ride a bus from the city centre to a stop in the zone, which should take less than 1 hour. Travel through the area and see the adjacent zones of Xinyi District, Bush Island and the Ren’ai District.
