"Stunning Hotel in the heart of Stone Town. So much character and charm! Sitting on the balcony watching the streets below was an absolute treat - as was the rooftop restaurant. We tried the seafood tasting menu which included some real gems along with some unfamiliar taste combinations. The call for prayer at the nearby mosque was quite loud - at 5.10 in the morning - but we quickly fell asleep again in the nice 4-poster bed. "
"This hotel is old and tired. The welcome was, at best, lukewarm, and the service was generally not good. The room was not well cleaned but there was good air conditioning, which was very welcome. Furniture was old and beds uncomfortable. The phone in the room did not work and other guests were allowed to yell at each other at 3am in the communal areas!
Breakfast offer was good.
Restaurant was awful - service was poor, food was almost inedible, card machine doesn’t work! They do not sell alcohol and don’t name this in their description. They do offer “mocktails” which are an absolute laugh! Don’t waste your money!
Swimming pool was nice but the chairs/sofas around the pool are very dirty.
Would not recommend it."
"The location is excellent—nothing in Stone Town is more than a 10-minute walk, which made it easy to get around. The only drawback is that the hotel is located down an alleyway where cars cannot access. If you’re traveling with luggage, you’ll need to ask your taxi driver to arrange for a concierge to come and assist.
The first room we were given was very small and extremely hot and never properly cooled down. After the first night, we requested a larger room. While we appreciated being accommodated, we were charged more than what the upgraded room would have cost had we booked it that way initially, which was disappointing. In the new room, the air conditioning unit wasn’t ideally positioned, so the sleeping area never cooled as effectively as we would have liked. That said, the bed itself was very comfortable.
The staff were a highlight of our stay. Everyone was pleasant and helpful, with special thanks to Habibi at the front desk and Luca, the Maasai concierge. Luca, in particular, went above and beyond—he carried our luggage multiple times to assist us, which we truly appreciated (even if we felt a bit bad for all the effort he put in!).
The main drawback for us was the breakfast setup. The dining area is not enclosed, and birds were a significant nuisance. On several occasions, we saw them eating directly from the buffet and from the bowl used by staff to prepare omelettes. Ugh! That presented hygiene concerns for us. "
"The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful, the room was clean and comfortable. The airport shuttle was free and even though our arrival flight was delayed by 2 hours the driver was there as we arrived "
"Beautiful property and great location in Stone Town. The breakfast and kitchen staff were amazing and very welcoming.
However, we booked the Presidential Suite but were not given that room and were instead moved between lower category rooms. The issue was not properly acknowledged, and staff insisted all rooms were the same and similarly priced, which did not reflect what was advertised on Expedia.
Overall, the stay did not match the booking, so I’d recommend confirming room types in advance."
