The Neighborhood:
Orford is the perfect place for anyone who wishes to get away from the hustle and bustle of day to day life and wishes to enjoy the peace and quiet of a village little changed over the years.
Orford is a beautiful spot offering a perfect base for walkers, cyclists, artists or those who wish to wander down to the river to watch the fishing boats go by! It lies within the Suffolk Coasts and Heaths Area of Outstanding Beauty.
Orford has an enchanting history, largely having grown since Henry II commissioned the popular Castle to be built in the 12th century. Once upon a time Orford was a bustling commercial and fishing port, however as Orfordness spit continued to grow it became harder for the boats to enter the estuary mouth, just 5 miles from Orford. The quay, whilst still used for smaller fishing craft and river tour boats, was built by the Normans, as was the stunning church in the village centre.
Orford has plenty to offer with regards to eating and drinking. It boasts two fabulous pubs, The Jolly Sailor and The Kings Head, as well as some superb restaurants, especially Pinney’s fish restaurant. One of our favourite places to go is to the Pump Street Bakery, which is world famous and offers especially delicious food and drink!
Orford has Tennis Courts and a Recreation Sports Ground with its own Clubhouse and children’s play area. Football is played on the Recreation Ground, which is also the site of the Annual Flower Show in August. Other sports and societies thrive including Bowls, Sailing and Badminton.
The village is 20 miles from Ipswich, 12 miles from both Woodbridge and Aldeburgh, and 5 miles from the famous Snape Maltings complex, popular for its magnificent Concert Hall and nearby Galleries and Shops. Orford and its immediate surrounding area are renowned for culture and good eating
