The best area to stay in White Cliffs is within the underground accommodations, known as dugouts, for a truly distinctive and comfortable experience. These dugouts are excavated into the hillsides, providing natural insulation that keeps them cool in summer and warm in winter. They offer a unique opportunity to experience the town's opal mining heritage first-hand. Many dugouts are located just a short walk from the town's main amenities, including the general store and the White Cliffs Hotel. For couples looking for a memorable and unusual getaway, staying in a dugout is an excellent choice. It offers privacy and a break from the ordinary, with the added benefit of experiencing the local way of life. Imagine waking up in a subterranean room, completely undisturbed, before heading out to explore the opal fields or the local museum.Families will also find dugouts to be a fascinating and practical option. The novelty of sleeping underground often excites children, and the natural climate control ensures a pleasant stay for everyone.

The best time to go to White Cliffs is during the cooler months, from April to October, to avoid the intense summer heat.During this period, the daytime temperatures are much more comfortable, typically ranging from 20°C to 28°C, making it ideal for exploring the opal fields and other outdoor attractions. The evenings are generally mild, superb for enjoying the unique underground accommodations or stargazing.Couples looking for a unique and comfortable Outback experience will find these months perfect. You can comfortably visit the underground homes, browse the opal shops, and take part in guided tours without the discomfort of extreme heat. The mild weather also makes it pleasant for evening strolls and enjoying meals at the local eateries. While White Cliffs is a destination that can be visited year-round, the summer months (November to March) see temperatures often exceeding 40°C, which can make outdoor activities challenging and less enjoyable.
