Overview: Sitting high on the ridge overlooking Long Bay Beach and the Atlantic on one side, and the Sir Francis Drake Channel and the Caribbean Sea on the other, the 1.8 acre gated compound has total privacy and truly spectacular views that are second to none. Designed by a renowned architect, Ridgemont House is made up of two separate pavilions that incorporate traditional Caribbean cues with their exteriors painted boldly in the vibrant colors of the West Indies with contrasting modern, elegant interiors. It is the definition of today’s sophisticated Caribbean luxury. The prestigious location and the expansive, amenity-packed property might keep you wanting to stay at home, but just down the hill is the stunning white-sand beach of Long Bay & its beachfront bars, restaurants and spa, as well as the Long Bay Beach Resort that provides available daily passes to access to their pool area, tennis and pickleball courts and fitness center. Our team at Villas of Tortola would love to welcome you! Space: LIVING AREAS: The first floors of the main house and guest house, the shaded veranda, the large pool, the guest bathroom and parking are all set on the same level, unusual on our mountainous island and perfect for socializing with a larger group. The main house contains the ballroom-sized Great Room and separate office. Enjoy the game on the big screen or your music on the Sonos sound system from the ample supply of comfortable seating. Packed with light & air, the living and dining areas feature six sets of 9' high French doors that open to the terrace running along three sides allowing indoor/outdoor living. The view from here is simply stunning. The Caribbean-tiled Great Room opens into the kitchen, appointed with stone counter tops, high quality Viking cooking appliances, and both a prep sink and separate cleanup sink next to the dishwasher. No need to shoo guest away. It is enormous and allows everyone to gather around the center island/breakfast bar for meal prep and cocktails. You'll find everything you need here for self-catering and more than enough workspace. Or choose our available chef for a fully catered affair. The glass and teak Balinese dining table offers a sophisticated indoor dining option, although we think you're going to want to go outside for that... STEP OUTSIDE: Outside there is more than 2000 square ft of coral-tiled living space. Pull up a lounger and catch some rays on the expansive deck alongside the large infinity edge pool, or lounge in the shade of the veranda's spacious al fresco seating area. The convenient guest bathroom, changing room and shower is also just off the deck. You'll find a large propane BBQ poolside, which is perfect for grilling up a local Anegada lobster and enjoying it from the covered outdoor dining area. The views from here are just breathtaking - looking out along the coastline and across to Jost Van Dyke and its surrounding isles with a gentle ocean breeze is just blissful. It's a really magical spot to sit with friends & family and enjoy a meal together or listen to some music through the Sonos sound system. To get above it all, head to the colorful gazebo high atop the ridge for a yoga session or cocktail with friends, or some downtime. Another incredible viewpoint, this is where I'd be going at sunset to watch those famous fiery BVI skies. BEDROOMS & BATHROOMS: No arguing over bedrooms necessary, as all five of the luxuriously decorated bedrooms are large with high ceilings, large windows and patios or balconies that frame glimmering views of the Atlantic or Caribbean Sea. Named after famous colonial explorers, each provides a king-size bed (or alternatively up to two rooms can be converted to XL-twins), flat screen television & Google smart sound speaker. All bedrooms are separated from the others and all have en-suites. One even offers all the features of a self-sufficient apartment, including an eat-in kitchenette complete with stove, microwave and refrigerator. The DaGAMA is downstairs of the guest house, adjacent to the pool, and has a poster king bed & ensuite with shower. There are two outdoor seating areas with expansive views from the bedroom and bathroom. The BALBOA is upstairs of the guest house and has a king sleigh bed, and is ensuite with a large walk-in closet and with a separate shower & tub. There are three outdoor seating areas with expansive views from the bedroom balcony, bathroom balcony and overlooking the pool. The COLUMBUS is on the lower level of the main house and has a 4-poster mahogany king bed as well as a daybed, and is ensuite with shower. There is also a self-contained kitchen and dinette area. Outside is a full-width private porch with expansive views. The MAGELLAN is on the upper level of main house and has a choice of king or two twin beds, and is ensuite with shower. There is a “Juliet balcony” overlooking pool with expansive views. It is at the opposite end of a hallway from the Marco Polo which makes it ideal for parents and younger children. The MARCO POLO is on the upper level of main house and has a choice of king or two twin beds, and is ensuite with shower. There is a private covered porch with views of the Caribbean Sea. It is at the opposite end of hallway from the Magellan, which makes it ideal for parents and younger children. OFFICE: The air conditioned office, located off the Great Room, allows for a discreet conference call or a bit of work, if you must. It is available for two additional guests (total of 12 guests) on a queen-size pullout sofa. The guest bathroom, also on the main level, is available to those staying in the office. Access Guests have sole access to the entire property. The estate road that winds its way up to Ridgemont House is fully paved but a four-wheel drive vehicle is highly recommended. AC: There is AC in all bedrooms & the office, & ceiling fans throughout HOUSEKEEPING: Housekeeping is twice per week. All linen and towels will be changed and a general cleaning will be done. Additional housecleaning is optionally available. GENERATOR: The automatic-start generator is a great plus for any pesky power outages WIFI: There is Wifi in all rooms to log into from your personal devices. PARKING: There is same-level driveway parking off the kitchen for your convenience - no long slog with shopping bags or suitcases! APPLE BAY (1.3 miles away) A little village with world-class winter surf and a handful of bars and restaurants (Nardie's Beach Bar, Sugar Mill, Tramonti) for all occasions. SMUGGLER’S COVE (1.8 miles away) Smuggler’s Cove is idyllic and perfectly sheltered by its vibrant reef which provides sensational snorkelling and is home to Patricia’s laid-back beach bar. \*cruise ship passengers sometimes come here so look online for the "BVI cruise ship schedule" to avoid the busier days. WINDY HILL (3 miles away) Head to Stoutts Lookout for a chilled beer with an incredible view over Cane Garden Bay or Banakeet (Heritage Inn) restaurant for one of the best dinner spots to watch the sunset on island. SOPER’S HOLE MARINA (3.6 miles away) Here you’ll find West End Ferry Terminal (where you can catch boats to fellow British Virgin Island Jost Van Dyke and US Virgin Islands St John and St Thomas) and a great selection of restaurants (Omar's Coffee House, Omar's Fusion & Pusser's Landing), a well-stocked grocery store, boat charter companies, shops and more. CANE GARDEN BAY (4.3 miles away) Cane Garden Bay is a hub of nightlife with plenty of places to eat, drink and be merry. To name a few, there’s Indigo House, Myetts, Elm’s Beach Bar, Paradise Club and Quito’s Gazebo for eating and drinking right on the beach. Many of these also have live music nights and fun events. Bobby’s Marketplace has all the essentials for stocking up on groceries. For beach activities, there’s plenty of beach bars you can rent a lounger from (or just setup on the sand). The water is calm and clear and underfoot is sandy so it's an excellent place for swimming. If you're feeling adventurous, there is a shipwreck a very short swim out from the North end of the beach which is great to check out with a snorkel. There are also jet skis, paddle boards and kayaks which can be rented along the beach. Our first time in the VBI’s and we hit the lottery with this outstanding home. There are lots of beautiful views in the Virgin Islands but I don’t think any could match the view we woke up to and went to bed with every night. The home was fantastic, comfortable, inviting. Each room had its own special view. The pool and landscaped grounds were were superb. The home and the staff were more than accommodating and efficient, they took time to talk, listen ask questions and anticipate our needs. On a scale of 1-10 it was a solid 15! If I only had one recommendation it would be to add HVAC to the main living area and kitchen. Two of the seven days we had good trade winds to cool those areas, but the other five days if no breeze it could get quite hot. 10 steps away was a cool pool to offset it. We plan to return again next year and possibly make it an annual family vacation destination. We had eight adults, two couples and the rest singles and we had more than enough space for togetherness or private quiet space. It’s definitely the perfect island home! ##### Ronny W. The property was great. 5 en-suite bedrooms which was perfect for our group of 8\. (3 couples & 2 singles). The property manager was great. Although it was a bit tough to communicate with her prior to arrival as text / emails didn’t go thru. For those reviewers that said you can walk to restaurants …. LIES. The hike down the hill is treacherous and back up is a BIG no way! And our group is fit. But those reviews are just nonsense. A car barely makes it up …. An SUV is a must. Great layout for multi-family We really enjoyed our stay. We've stayed at many upscale homes and I think we all agree that the layout and pool for this one is the best. Great layout, ideal for finding places to gather as family or find a spot by yourself with amazing views and tropical breezes. We ate multiple times at the outdoor dining table with the pool on one side and the sea on the other. Big, big island in the middle of the kitchen so it didn't get cramped even with 6 or 8 of us wandering around. Pool was delightful and the landscaping lovely (even though completely outclassed by the view). Nice Sonos sound system for some ambience music. Kitchen does not have AirCond, so can get quite hot in the summer months, and if it was my home, I would upgrade the wifi to satellite and mesh to improve coverage in the house and throughput, as it was a bit flaky. Each bedroom has it's own AirCond, which worked very well. Three weeks since our stay and I can see the beautiful view of Jost van Dyke in my minds eye. ##### robert b. Sam provided excellent communication in the booking process and helped with securing cars, activities and groceries. This house is amazing. We had 5 adult couples and each loved their room. The kitchen is spacious and well appointed. When we were home, we spent most of our time out on the patio and pool deck. The drive is adventurous! The road is well maintained and paved the entire way but is steep and curvy like most of Tortola. We will for sure stay at this house again if needing a house on Tortola. Tortola and the rest of the BVI have made huge strides in coming back from the hurricanes. Most of the places we wanted to go were open and happy to have us and there was progress every day on something new. ##### Colleen P. Everything was top-notch, including the beds, furniture, towels, sheets, etc. All of the rooms are updated and modern, whereas some other houses we have rented in the past in the Caribbean have updated rooms in the main house and out-dated rooms in the guest house. Views are incredible. Pool was perfect. Location on the west end is ideal with easy access to Soper's Hole Marina where you can grab a quick ferry to Jost or elsewhere. Also closeby are various nice beaches. Ridgemont has a Sonos wireless sound system that is great to play whatever music you want to hear. Worked pretty well but you can always stream music from Youtube or another source to a portable wireless speaker if you bring one. The property managers were fantastic and very responsive to questions you have while there, such as directions, recommendations, day trips, etc. You won't be disappointed at Ridgemont. ##### Jen M. Once you enter the gates, you will notice the spectacular landscaping along the driveway on the way up. There are three different living areas at Ridgemont. The main house has a study, an unbelievably spacious kitchen with top of the line appliances, a living room with plush seating with a 60 inch flat screen TV, and a covered lanai where we spent most of our time. There is a 4 bedroom double story unit, and a 1 bedroom efficiency with a complete kitchen down the steps from the pool, The views from the house are mezmorizing. From the deck, you can see Jost and St Thomas. Once you take the 12 steps up behind the bedroom house to the gazebo, you can see both sides of the Island , and the other BVI Islands in the Sir Francis Drake channel. Being on top of the mountain, the breeze is so cool that you might not want to turn the air conditioning on. Smugglers Cove and Long Bay beach are a must visit just at the bottom of the hill, and Sopers hole in West End/Sopers Hole is close to get your provisions and has clothes and jewelry shopping, Pusser's restaurant, and "Voyages"to book day sails. Go to the "Baths" in Virgin Gorda--you will never see anything more spectacular. Sebastian's has great food, as well as local fare at Palm's Delight in Carrot Bay. New discovery was Scaramouche restaurant past the fuel dock at Sopers--very creative offerings with a great Chef. We have rented from Sam and JC many times, and they have always been such great hosts. We are heading back to Ridgemont in a few months. I have traveled throughout the Caribbean, and have lived in St Thomas, but once I took my first surf trip to Tortola in 1989, it was eye awakening to me of how relaxing the Island is and the beautiful nature and the locals. Once you enter the gates, on the drive up to the house, you will notice that the landscaping is unbelievable, and you will know that you will be in for an incredible experience. Upon entering the house, you are greeted with amenities that are top notch. Huge kitchen Very modern washer and dryer. Sonos speakers throughout the house. Huge bedrooms. Unbelievable pool/views. A quick 12 steps up behind the Main House, there is a Gazebo that will allow you to see both sides of the Island. Just booked Ridgemont again. We have rented with Sam and JC at the Murray House for 2 years, Gun Point for one, and Ridgemont last year, and they cannot be more accomidating and friendly. This review was submitted before 2018 and has not been verified. ### 10/10 Excellent 29 Jan 2016 #### Family celebration at Ridgemont House Our far flung family congregated at Ridgemont House this holiday season to celebrate the 80th birthdays of grandma and grandpa. We had a wonderful time and family members of all ages (the youngest was 16) really enjoyed the gorgeous, perfectly maintained property. The grandparents got the easily accessible first floor bedroom, but all bedrooms are beautiful and private and each has its own special feature. Up on the ridge you have incredible, ever-changing views and a steady light breeze. We thought the property should be renamed "Rainbow House" as we were treated to an incredible display of double, full round rainbows every day. We hiked down to the excellent beach and back up every day, we went snorkeling and swimming in nearby Smuggler's cove. We love cooking together and had all dinners at home - no restaurant could beat the setting! The house provided an ample and beautiful backdrop for our family to hang out together and relax. The managers were very responsive and helpful, whenever we made a suggestion it was done right away. This review was submitted before 2018 and has not been verified. ### 10/10 Excellent 20 Apr 2015 #### This estate is an Aman Resort-Level Experience I'm a 30 year resident of the BVI who has been in all the Great Houses on Tortola, and am also a resident of Denmark. This spring, we rented this house for some old family friends, a family of seven who maintain two castles in Europe as their private residences and a major estate at the top of the Peak in Hong Kong. So, they know nice. Frankly, they were blown away by the house design and execution as much as they were the view and grounds. The entire place is fresh, tasteful, and dramatic, and the staff and property managers are all very friendly and helpful. There's not a person in the world I wouldn't recommend this property to as an amazing vacation setting. This review was submitted before 2018 and has not been verified. ### 10/10 Excellent 11 Dec 2014 #### Ridgemont House of Tortola Ridgemont House is newly renovated and under new ownership. We knew it was a little risky to be the first ones to stay here after the renovation but it turned out to be the best vacation and best experience any of us (four couples) had ever had. The view from everywhere in the villa was breathtaking. The villa faces north with a 180 degree view of the Caribbean and surrounding islands—and there is a gazebo above the villa where you see both sides of the island. The infinity pool (beautiful) sits between the two buildings that make up the villa. Everything is sparkling new, freshly stocked, and newly decorated. The furniture, furnishings, linens, curtains, and all the rooms are well done and quite elegant. The kitchen is a knock out. There also is a separate kitchen in the bedroom where my wife and I stayed but we didn’t use it except for making coffee and keeping some cold drinks in the refrigerator. After we figured out how to connect our cell phones to the Sonos speaker system (you had to download the Sonos app), we were able to listen to our own music throughout the main areas. We hung out together in the living room, kitchen and dining room and lounged by the pool. But when we retreated to our own rooms it was as if each couple was the only couple in the villa. That is, it was quiet and very private. Also, if you are sharing the cost with other couples, every bedroom is comparable with a great view -- there is no awkwardness deciding who gets which bedroom. The villa is close to a couple of the best beaches and some lovely restaurants. As for Tortola, the island people are very friendly and helpful. We highly recommend Ridgemont House.
