Not having someone there was convenient and kind of odd at the same time. It’s a very creaky house due to its age. The price is the best I saw on the whole island. Pretty far from the bigger towns though.

Thank you for your feedback. Yes, Volcano Hale is located in Volcano Village and is a self-check-in facility. With that said, we do offer multiple rooms so on any given day there could be multiple parties. I hope you had a wonderful time in Volcano and got to sample some of the local restaurants as well as the National Park.

This house hotel was great. Check-in was a breeze and the private and shared spaces were well maintained for an older property. The village of Volcano is quite small but had some great dining options. The property itself felt a bit isolated, and that was generally a positive for me. However, I could see how some could find its isolation a negative.

Thank you Jordan for your review. Volcano Hale is located in an unique area of the Big Island, Volcano Village. We can agree that it certainly isn't for everyone but the vast majority do appreciate the seclusion and simplicity of Volcano as you did. We encourage everyone to read up on any area they plan to visit to have the best information possible when booking.

Near the national park entrance, not near anything else. Plan on doing a lot of driving if you stay here. The conecide would probably be best for most people. The house is small, the bathrooms are shared, very basic.

Mahalo Kennith for posting your comments. Yes, it’s true, Volcano Village is about a half hour drive from Hilo. If you were expecting big box stores and fast-food chains, you will be sorely disappointed. Volcano Village is a small and unique town located right outside the entrance of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Just a few restaurants, general stores, post office, and of course great hikes. Our property, Volcano Hale, is about as basic as you can get. We cater to those looking for nothing fancy, just a cozy spot to get some sleep while exploring the local area.

Superb Self-Catering in Volcano!
Volcano Hale is excellent at what it says it is, and I therefore give it 5 stars. It is not an Inn or an Hotel! It is, though, a fun, comfortable, eclectically decorated self-catering place. So you check yourself in to a spacious vintage house, cook your own food, share bathrooms, and (most importantly) you clean up after yourself. The bedrooms are quite nice. You will also meet lovely new people at the breakfast table, or when you return each evening from a thrilling day of peering into volcanoes. Highly recommended as fun, different, interesting, comfortable, and good value.

Property mostly unattended except for housekeeping and maintenance, I liked that. Very clean and maintained. We stayed a week and felt like a cozy little home and not at all like a noisy crowded resort. Uses water collected from rain stored in a tank so bring bottled water to drink or cook. It's on elevated land and even in summer the temps were cool and comfortable. Very close to volcano national Park and not to far to get to Hilo either. I'd recommend staying here and had the best price on the island.

Positives- location - this property is very close to Volcanos national park. The property is very isolated, make sure you have supplies before arriving. There was never any contact with the hosts, they ask you to write your CC info on a piece of paper and leave it in your room. No verification of guests is done, you simply pick up an envelope freely available at the front door and your off. I could have been anyone and grabbed the keys. There were only 3 out of 5 rooms occupied when i was there, so bathrooms were not an issue, there were plenty of towels available. A coach or sofa in the common areas would have made them more usable. All in all, a reasonable place to stay close to the park, just make sure to purchase any supplies before arriving. The local town/village of Volcano is not very well stocked. If you were disabled, this would be a difficult choice, it is an old house with staircases, so be aware of that.

Aloha Thomas and thank you for posting your review. Yes, our property is non-hosted. Rest assured that we are always available for guests needs and a phone number is provided should anyone have any issues. Volcano Hale is visited daily by staff to help make sure everything is well stocked and all guests needs are met. Arrival envelopes are quite common for non-hosted hotels and we have never experience any issues with this process. Registration cards are collected upon departure by management so they are never left unattended. Overall I hope you had a great time with your visit to Volcano Village and we thank you for choosing us. Mahalo.

The Volcano Hale is located in a quiet residential area, but it's super convenient for visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The shared bathroom turned out not to be an issue - I was never in conflict with any of the other guests at the property. Parking was convenient at this perfectly pleasant property. Check-in and check-out are simple and don't require any interaction with the off-site staff, so it didn't matter when I arrived or left. When I'm in the area in the future, I'll definitely consider Volcano Hale for my stays.

Nothing unique. Ok for the price. Quiet place but everything is quiet over there. Like the envelope with the information and the plan to reach the village and the Volcanoes Park. Bathrooms were perfect. A lot of towels, clean and full equip. Didn't like that we can NOT turn off or stop, while eating, the fan ceiling above the table. Really not cool. Also, if you provide coffee, then make sure you have sugar and cream, even if not real cream. Nothing there than just an empty basket.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience! Yes, this entire remote area is very quiet and sleepy. We encourage travelers to plan accordingly. We're happy to hear you were pleased with our well-equipped, clean bathrooms. We will definitely look into the sugar/cream and ceiling fan concern. Volcano Hale is a shared facility; the kitchen is shared; we have learned that not everyone is a good chef! Sometimes, the cooking from the kitchen needs help so we employ the lobby fan to dissipate these cooking smells for everyone else's comfort. Perhaps there is another solution.

Charming and characterful
This is a heritage building surrounded by semi tropical gardens. Bedrooms are small but adequate but share a bathroom, not a problem for two nights with considerate neighbours. There is a communal room with a kitchen, useful if you arrive late. Fellow travellers are young couples and families. The situation is very convenient fo the Volcanoes National Park, five minutes away so seeing the park at night is easy. Restaurants are nearby. We loved staying here.

Little difficult to find with an after hours check-in - dark roads not very clearly marked. Room was not near central office, breakfast was coffee (powdered creamer, no milk/cream), papaya & instant oatmeal packs. Ok if you're just sleeping there, but wouldn't recommend for families

Do no honor cancellation policy
Hotel is good. My problem is with hotel not honoring cancellation policy. I had a second reservation (and that was not made with hotels.con) whose cancellation policy reads 72 HR CXL which means no penalty for cancellation up to 72 hours prior to arrival time. I cancelled that reservations several months before arrival date, yet the hotel refused to fully refund the money. To me this is not an honest way to run a business.

Affordable lodging near Volcanoes National Park
We stayed here 4 nights while day-hiking Kileaua. Volcano Hale offered us an affordable place to stay nearby. The only thing that kept me from awarding 5 stars was the fact that we shared a bathroom. It was never a problem but the Mrs would have preferred a private bath.

Location Good; Accommodtions So-So
Okay if you don't mind small bedrooms with only a fan, no air conditioning. Where we stayed was a mile from the main house and registration. There was a charge for a continental breakfast but coffee was free offered at the main house. The accommodations were in a remodeled home that had two bedrooms and one bathroom on the third floor, three bedrooms and one bathroom , the common kitchen and dinning area on the second floor and two bedrooms and one bathroom with a sitting area on the first floor. If you wanted privacy you had to stay in your bedroom. That said, the location was good for visiting Volcano National Park. Restaurants nearby were also good especially the Thai Thai Restaurant.

Snug to the extreme
Admittedly I took the cheapest room with shared bath but I was not expecting the loft style room with beams covered in soft material in case you hit your head. No remote for TV either. We will call it cosy. Continental breakfast a short drive away was excellent value, and option of self cater in shared kitchen. Overall OK.

A different but fun experience
If you are accustomed to to standard chain hotels this may not be the place for you. Lovely 1912 Hawaiian home offers private rooms small but adequate and shared bathrooms (updated and lovely), kitchen and living area. You can be as friendly with the other guests as pleases you. Inexpensive and very close to the volcano national park. Beautiful grounds. I really enjoyed our stay.

Cozy hotel with nice garden in a cute village
The hotel is a three story house with 4 rooms per level, all of them decorated in unique style but of modest size. The only disadvantage is the shared bathrooms (only 3) but they are well equipped with towels and other stuff. The breakfast is extra charge (very affordable) and with a lot of tropical fruits. Note the reception is in another building (5 mins drive) and it closes at 5pm. After that you will find your keys and all the info to get to the room in an envelope.

very cozy, liked the convenience of communal kitchen, meeting fellow travelers. it was a very price worthy. great location for exploring the volcano. Though they should ask guests on the upper floor to tread lightly as the NENE room is partially below the stairwell. Thue continental breakfast at $6.00 p/p is adequate, but nothing special. The staff is friendly and helpful. The kitchen and common areas were kept neat and clean and well equiped..

Charming chalet, bad bed!
The chalet itself was a beautiful gem of a place, spotlessly clean, quiet, shared kitchen and bathroom facilities with nice grounds. The only thing was that we were in the Nene room and the bed was soft and sagged in the middle so that you rolled into the middle of the bed all the time. Had worst night sleep which was a shame as everything else was great!

Pretty much a grown up hostel
I wasn't a big fan of this hotel, but i think it was due to misunderstood expectations, so here is the low down. This hotel is part of a collection, so you check in at a sister property a couple of roads away then get directed here. There are no staff based at the Volcano Hale building. The Hale is set up like a hostel with a shared kitchen and one shared bathroom on each floor (bathrooms are clean with plenty of clean towels etc). Our room was quite small, and didn't have air con, just a fan and a dehumidifier, so it was a little hot, but not too bad. The rooms were clean, but as they are a bit dated and rustic looking, it feels a bit messy. All restaurants and shops are a drive away rather than a walk, but not too far. As long as you are expecting a kind of grown up hostel then i'm sure you'll be more than satisfied with the hotel.

Staying in Volcano
This is the 2nd time we've stayed at Volcano Hale, so clearly it must be okay! However it is a quirky place. It's set up with shared bathrooms and each of the two rooms we've been are a bit odd. This latest room though makes me wonder if we'll be back. Several of the men I know would not have been able to stand up straight in the room; the beams are padded which is a clue! My husband who is 5'9" had to duck his head. Many of the places in volcano are expensive, so if you're looking to save some money, this can be a good way. We see it as a place to sleep after a long hike. And then you can splurge on dinner at Kilauea Lodge

Nice peaceful location but noisy building
The location and service is good. However our room was way too small for two adults. So was the bed. It is a room in a house so the noise level depends on the other occupants. We had quite noisy ones chatting outside our room in the common area, which was a little troublesome. They might have shut up if we asked. We also had people walk (or run) on the floor above between 3 and 5 am, which was pretty noisy and made it difficult to sleep. I would recommend this room only if you are single and are pretty much immune to noise as you sleep.

Decent place at a decent price
We were 2 people for one night and it was ok for us. The room we stayed in was well maintained and clean. Small TV, clock radio, and plugs to charge the smartphones. It was a bit crammed, the space around the bed was narrow but still enough to lay down the small luggage we had. The bathroom is shared, but still very clean, and we didn't have any problems with its availability. The water had good pressure too, and the cleaning staff seemed to make sure there is always a good supply of towels and soap. The location is good too, a mere 10 minutes drive from the National Park entrance. Overall, it's a good place for a short stay if you want to explore the volcano and the surroundings, if you plan to stay there for more than 3 days I would recommend at least getting a bigger room.
