This province encompasses Argentina’s fifth-largest city and a diverse landscape of mountains and valleys that provides a picturesque backdrop for adventure sports.

Explore one of Argentina’s most densely populated provinces, Tucumán,to see its bustling metropolitan capital city and the surrounding small towns. Tucumán’s nickname is the “Garden of the Republic” because of its high number of spring blooms. Travel through the province and you’ll soon encounter vast fields of sugarcane, evidence of Tucumán’s agricultural roots.

Plan a trip to the capital city, San Miguel de Tucumán. Warm temperatures combined with elegant architecture make this a popular stop-off for tourists. Admire the towering religious structures such as the neoclassical Catedral and Iglesia San Francisco. Take a tour of the House of Tucumán, where congressmen gathered in 1816 to declare Argentina’s independence.

Travel to the west of Tucumán to go hiking or mountain biking in Tafí del Valle. This village nestled between mountains provides plenty of open space in which to get active. Take an excursion to Los Sasos River and go sport fishing at La Angostura Dam. Tafí del Valle’s sister town, Amaicha del Valle, is another popular destination for exploring the Calchaqui Valleys.

Discover fascinating archeological ruins scattered across the province. Among the most notable are the Quilmes Ruins, the site of what was once one of the largest pre-Columbian settlements in the country. Many ruins in the smaller towns are still largely unexplored.

Don’t leave Tucumán without trying regional delicacies such as empanadas, which are often served as the starting course for lunch or dinner. Spicy tamales are also popular. Practice your Spanish with the locals who run the inns and restaurants.

Renting a car is the most flexible way to travel around Tucumán, but you can also take a bus to the province from most mid-sized and large Argentinian cities. Alternatively, hop on a weekly scheduled train from Buenos Aires.
