The Rose and Crown is very old: it is a Grade II listed building (read the entry about it online at British listed buildings). Above the entrance is a rare survivor: an inn sign with the arms of Frederick Prince of Wales and Princess Augusta, parents of the future George III (they married 1736, he died 1751). Usually inns had the arms of the monarch, in this case George II. The king and his son did not get along, and Frederick gathered a following of his own - so the innkeeper was taking sides in the royal standoff! The facade is a typical reserved Georgian brick design. Inside (reception, bar and restaurant) are timber beams of a much earlier building. So the inn got a face-lift c1736-50). Upstairs, the rooms are along corridors at different levels - the typical ramshackle construction of half-timbered buildings. The doors are unusually small, again as was often the case in earlier structures. So you know you are in a historic space. It won’t be up to modern hotel standards but if you insist, at the back is a wing built in the 1970s. In the historic block, the bathrooms have been renovated recently. I would hope the carpeting and the beds are next - I would charitably say they were acceptable. My Full English Breakfast was cooked fresh to order and was well up to standard. Staff were friendly. It was an interesting experience and reasonable at this price point.

It was very convenient for local amenities and parking was good. The room was adequate but cold because the heating didn't work. The temperature of the shower was fixed and the bathroom light was temperamental.

Room not cleaned thoroughly.Found toe nails on carpet. Bath very slippery, No rubber shower matt in bath. my partner slipped twice getting out and hurt himself. Needs updating. Wasn't told we had to ask to stay in the rooms in the pub, we have stayed in the rooms in the pub before and had an excellent time. We stay again if we had room in pub.

A very third rate experience. Ripped & stained net curtains. Wallpaper coming off wall. Dirty hand basin (not cleaned from previous guest). Bathroom shelf not level - items fell off. Smeared mirrors and tiles. Generally grubby communal areas. Marked and stained furniture. Less than comfy beds. The only good thing was the location. Needs a complete overhaul and brought up to modern expectations. At £60 a night off season, an expensive & less than pleasant stay.

Explore Tonbridge Easily!
Nice single room. Lovely and clean. However, a Summer quilt in the middle of Winter is not sufficient to keep your guests toasty! I do believe your written gumph stated that extra blankets were available. When I asked at reception I was told they were not. I was given a lovely warm heater though but this was not practical to have on all night, as you got too hot. So no happy medium for Room No 2! The answer lays in 15 tog quilt. Then I will come again and give you 5 stars! Parking is fantastic though and it is a brilliant hotel for exploring Tonbridge with as is so central. I would definitely recommend a visit and for £63, you definitely cant go wrong!

Not great, still giving small plastic bottles of shampoo in each room rather than a refillable large bottle. Hotel very dated and tired. If was fine for a one night stay as the location was convenient but I wouldn't stay again. Clean bedding and towels but the room was generally dusty with cobwebs in the corners

The property has seen better days and is now clearly run down. The room was cool the heating appeared not to work while the bathroom had no heating and a window that did not close properly. The shower did not work effectively but since this was a bathroom not to linger in that was the least of our problems. We found one of the bed side lamps not working and there was no spare bulb available so no reading in bed. Overall a very uncomfortable stay not to be repeated.

Victoria Suite, with 4 poster bed review
We stayed in Victoria Suite, lovely bed, very comfortable. Bathroom nice and clean, but no water pressure in shower, unless on very hot. Carpet to bedroom needs proper clean, not just vacum. Really is a lovely room, would stay again, would give 5 stars, if not for minor issues noted above.

We used the Rose and Crown many years ago and it was ok. Needed a hotel in Tonbridge urgently for family reasons and therefore the Rose and Crown. We didn’t book breakfast as according to the websites, breakfast was a pre-packed take away affair. On arrival we were assured that breakfast was available at a cost of £11 per person. It seems the website hasn’t been updated since covid. During our stay there was no evidence of anyone having breakfast. The restaurant does not serve food at any other times. We made it to our room, which was of a poor standard. The furniture was old and showing the many scars of its age. The carpet was equally aged and certainly had not seen the benefit of a powerful vacuum cleaner for some time. The bathroom required some real care in terms of cleaning, with black grime on the grouting in many areas. The toilet has the most peculiar flushing mechanism, which requires two pushes on the lever to make it flush. After asking for assistance we were told that it is designed to do that. The shower was impossible to operate satisfactorily warm water at best. This hotel was previously a member of the Best Western chain. Nowadays at best it is only worth 1 star.

Very good value in a good position near the castle. In the process of being upgraded I think, the restaurant only offered breakfast, which was good. There is a bar. Staff were very polite and helpful.

DO NOT BOTHER!! Stayed in a twin room. Down stairs is adequate, the room smelt Smokey, mouldy and dirty. The floor was covered in human hair, the bedding was clean at least. Went into the bathroom and the ceiling was leaking from the rain, not a little leak but quite heavy. Informed the reception who offered another room that was a lot smaller and smelt bad too. Decided to ask to stay in the room we had and they gave additional towels to soak up the water for the duration. The rain stopped and so did the leak. It seems they were shocked at reception but this can’t be the first time as there is a bucket in the bathroom!! Thought it might have been a nice gesture to offer the breakfast for free that we’d already paid for, nothing! The ceiling as I came out of the room is very low, no warning signs for people. Oh well I guess that’s what you get at Best Western. Breakfast was average at best. Avoid if you can.

An overnight stay en route to the West Country. All members of staff were very helpful and Receptionist was welcoming and informative. The hotel and my room was comfortable, well appointed and clean. Being situated in the high street, the hotel is convenient for access to Tonbridge town centre, the park and castle and an ideal centre for exploring the local countryside. Highly recommended.

Convenient location but a bit overpriced
Great location in High Street but overpriced for the standard. The hotel has seen better days and would benefit from a refresh. Breakfast was a bit limited and service at breakfast not the best - had to hunt around for some ketchup and pepper and vacated tables were being wiped with strong cleaning liquid smell whilst we were still eating! Bathroom didn't have any shower or bath gel and our room overlooked a very unkempt area with deep weeds growing all over the place included over the generators. Really doesn't feel like this place is very well kept - I don't think £134 for one night is justified!

The bathroom was clean. The sink tap was loose as was the toilet seat. The bedding and towels were clean. The window seals in the room I stayed in were dirty and dusty. The communal areas were much the same. The carpark entrance was a nightmare to find. Nothing was mentioned when I booked. I used the postcode in my navigator to get to the hotel which took me to the front where there is a bus lane. I was worried about parking there, so in the end I went to a nearby carpark then walked back to the hotel to get directions on how to find the entrance to carpark. When I left the hotel today the receptionist didn’t tell me that I needed a code to get out of the carpark. A gentleman working on his property came to my rescue. I wouldn’t stay at the hotel again. I also think £105.01 is over priced to stay at this hotel.

Tired, hot, uninspiring but helpful receptionist.
This stay was a bit of a disaster. First of all i need to say that the receptionist that i met in the morning ( young lady) most helpful as we needed to leave a vehicle in the car park for the day. This is an old property - 200 year plus i seem to recall.This may explain some of my issues, but not all. It was a hot day but past the heatwave. My room was frankly unbearable and the window had been left just about open to get a bit of air in but it could not make up for the heat in the room. When arrived there was another guest asking if he could get another room due to heat, so it was not just my room. There was a fan - but this had obviously fallen over a few times and as a result did not work correctly, so it didn't really help. I went for food. Restaurant closed until further notice and the staff couldn't expand on this..Had to go out and eat in the end. Went back to the bar, but no one in sight to serve and it was very uninviting to say the least. Wireless - did not work in my room, so i couldn't work. My phone thermometer in the room was reading 29oC and this did not change until 3 am when i eventually dropped off. The bedroom looked as if it was re-furbed a few years ago but poor finish and photocopied labels are peeling off which didn't look great. Room comfortable but the hotel is very tired rather than old. Looks as if they started to re-furb but ran out of money. Shame

Dreadful one night stay
The staff on arrival were polite however, the room was only adequate for 1 night, it is definitely in need of modernisation. The mattress was lumpy & uncomfortable, the shower lever was difficult to adjust & there was a bottle cap from the previous occupants shampoo left on the shower lever suggesting the bath/shower hadn't been thoroughly cleaned. The annexe building we were in had lots of cigarette stubs on the ground around the entrance door by the bin which wasn't a welcome site. Rather disappointing over-all.

Comfy but noisy
A creaky hotel which is to be expected, however, door on corridor banging most of the night. A hot night, there wasn’t a fan available so we had to have the windows open, being in room 18, at the front of the building, it was very noisy. The cold bath/shower tap did not work. Bed was comfy and staff pleasant

30th wedding anniversary stay
We stayed here last year and loved it so booked again and added an extra night. From booking in to checking out the staff were amazing and helpful. The bed was so comfortable and the shower pressure was amazing. Would definitely recommend this hotel and will book again next year.
