The city is one of the country’s oldest continuously inhabited settlements and stands at an elevation of 8,200 feet (2,500 metres). Expect warm days November through March and cold winter nights the rest of the year. Note that the full name of the city is San Francisco de Tilcara.
It is in the province of Jujuy in northwestern Argentina, close to the borders with Chile and Bolivia. Take a bus north from Jujuy for 50 miles (80 kilometres) to get here.
