Ambergate station, 1995. View southward, towards Derby: ex-Midland main lines northwards from Derby, to Sheffield, Leeds etc. and to Buxton and Manchester. Although by-passed by expresses on the Derby - Sheffield route, Ambergate station was a main-line station on the main Peak Line (closed 6/3/67 north of Matlock) which was also served by slow trains to Chesterfield and Sheffield. As well, by trains on the line to Pye Bridge on the Erewash Valley route, at platforms on an east-to-north loop (closed 2/1/57 for passengers, 2/2/67 for goods) which made Ambergate an unusual triangular station. In former times there was also constant coal and freight traffic going through on all these lines, making Ambergate extremely busy, but since the 1960's run-down all that remains is this single platform that serves the Derby - Matlock local service.
Rivers Derwent and Amber, Ambergate. This shows the confluence of the River Derwent (to the left) and its tributary, the Amber. The valleys of these rivers, coming together here, made Ambergate an important road and rail junction, although there is not much to the village itself.
