The fortress is located 1 km off the road, half way between Tianeti and Akhmeta. But please be aware that the "road" between Tianeti and Akhmeta, shown on most maps in fact is a 21 km long mountain dirt road for which I would recommending a 4W drive, even I saw several 2W drive cars dragging along with some 10km/h and probably touching ground more than once. The last 1-1.5 km up-hill to the fortress are challenging, even with a 4W-Drive. The fortress originally served as protection against Mongol invaders and later against Dagestani invaders. It was mostly used only in summer months when the raids were usual. In winter people lived in the village below the fortress. It has lost its purpose in 19th century after the Russians allied with local Tushs. It was abandoned and destroyed during World War II. In 2003 the reconstruction started and sponsored by a Dutch family. Many of the towers were built back from ruins, accomodating a museum of local tradition with many old photos from the region.
