Puerto Maldonado is the up and coming tourism spot with Inkaterra running several lodges situated on the banks of the Madre de Dios river. You can also fish for piranha. They are hard to catch for a novice but our guide caught several. We took them back to the lodge and the kitchen cooked them for us. They are very bony fish!
