"Extremely local chinese hotel. English speaking staff were far and few. Staff all hesitant and not confident to deal with foreigners so the communication was a struggle. But everyone was nice and polite. The common areas are not well maintained (i.e. lobby) so if you are looking for an upscale experience this is not your place. Most importantly the operations and management of the place is very poor. Everyone was all over the place. It was a mess. The team couldn’t manage the guests and it...

Top Taiyi Hotel Reviews

Hotel Indigo Dali Erhai by IHG

10/10 Excellent

"It’s a five stars hotel. We stayed in high floor with beautiful lake view. The staff were very friendly and helpful."

Hilton Garden Inn Dali Ancient City

8/10 Good

"i stayed here for a visit with friends and was happy with it. the hotel is clean and comfortable with surprisingly large rooms. it's more of a group-tour hotel with lots of tour buses around - but good value for a comfortable room located near some of the major sights in Dali. The breakfast was very good. I'd recommend it for someone who wants affordable comfort while exploring Dali."

Clouds Villa

8/10 Good

"Extremely local chinese hotel. English speaking staff were far and few. Staff all hesitant and not confident to deal with foreigners so the communication was a struggle. But everyone was nice and polite. The common areas are not well maintained (i.e. lobby) so if you are looking for an upscale experience this is not your place. Most importantly the operations and management of the place is very poor. Everyone was all over the place. It was a mess. The team couldn’t manage the guests and it affected our enjoyment and experience."

Dali Taoxi Secret Manor

10/10 Excellent

"Dali Taoxi Secret Manor is easily one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. The whole place feels like paradise with its beautiful gardens, and looking out at the mountains every morning was just stunning. My room was amazing and very well thought out. It had a fantastic bed, a wonderful bathroom, and a nice little courtyard. My spot right next to the main hall was perfect, and the mountain view from the room was incredible. Breakfast was great every morning—always fresh, delicious, and consistent. The location is also very good. It is an easy 10-minute walk past some nice old shops right to the gate of Dali Old Town, so it’s close to everything but still quiet. The best part of all was the staff. They really know what they are doing. They were warm, helpful, and genuine, but they also knew when to give you your space and when to offer help. A truly wonderful place. I couldn't have asked for a better stay."

The Windyard Kazan Onsen Hotel-Private Hot Spring Bathtub close to South Gate of Dali Ancient Town

8/10 Good

"It was a good stay for us, the room was clean, staff very friendly, but if you are a non smoker, there's second hand smoke in the breakfast area or common areas, which is typical of most properties as the staff smoke. The breakfast is suited for Chinese travelers, so if you are accustomed to a western style breakfast, you won't find it here."

SIXI GOLDEN SUNRISE SOUND SLEEP HOTEL

8/10 Good

"The hotel was very clean and the gentleman working behind the front desk was very friendly and tried his very best to help with questions we had about traveling around Dali. The hotel is right in the middle of Dali Ancient City, so if that's what you want the location is excellent. It's a bit of a ride to the train station, but Didi's are very affordable. The hotel is very hard to find and the translation for the name of the hotel from English to Mandarin doesn't give the right name of the hotel. It took us awhile to find the hotel and even our DiDi driver from the airport didn't know the name of the hotel, somehow we found it. It's a small boutique hotel with clean rooms, comfortable bed, and breakfast made to order. Overall it was a good stay for the price."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Taiyi?

For most travellers, the best area to stay in Taiyi is the Old Town, particularly around the ancient city walls and the central square.

This area is the heart of Taiyi and offers a truly authentic experience. It's incredibly walkable, with cobbled streets, traditional wooden architecture, and a relaxed pace. You'll find a wide selection of guesthouses, local eateries, and artisan shops selling handcrafted goods. The central square is a focal point for evening activities, including traditional music and dance performances.

Couples looking for a romantic and culturally rich getaway will find the Old Town ideal. The charming alleyways are great for leisurely strolls, and many guesthouses offer intimate settings with courtyards and mountain views. Evenings can be spent enjoying local cuisine in a traditional setting or simply relaxing in the peaceful surroundings.

Solo travellers will also appreciate the Old Town for its welcoming atmosphere and ease of navigation. It's easy to meet other travellers in the common areas of guesthouses or at the local tea houses, and the compact nature of the area makes exploring on foot straightforward.

When is the best time to go to Taiyi?

The best time to visit Taiyi is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) months.

These periods offer the most pleasant weather, with mild temperatures and less rainfall. Spring brings blooming flowers and clear skies, making it ideal for exploring the city's outdoor attractions and the surrounding natural landscapes like the Cangshan Mountains. Autumn provides crisp air and comfortable conditions for sightseeing and hiking.

Couples often find these seasons superb for a romantic getaway. You can enjoy strolls through the Old Town's cobbled streets, visit the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple, or take a scenic boat trip on Erhai Lake without the intense heat or heavy rains of summer. The evenings are cool and pleasant for dining al fresco.

For solo travellers who enjoy outdoor activities, spring and autumn provide excellent conditions for hiking and cycling. Many trails around Erhai Lake and in the Cangshan Mountains are easily accessible and offer stunning views.
