Thanks for your feedback. Rural areas can be hard to find day or night but we send all our guests e-mails with directions with their reservation confirmation. We hope that helps. In your room there are reading lights inside your headboard. If you stay with us again, we will be happy to point them out. Thanks again for your comments - they are always helpful.

The Teacherage was very quiet, clean and relaxing. The hostess was accommodating and helpful. We enjoyed breakfast on the side porch in a country setting with birds and trees.

This was quite the little surprise. This house was awesome. The owners of this property were great!! We were met at the door, as we pulled into the drive. If we are ever in this area, I will stay here again.

The innkeepers were friendly and accomodating. The location was perfect for our planned activities at nearby state parks. We appreciate the adaptive reuse of an historic structure.

The Teacherage was an interesting house. Historic background. The room was a bit austere, could have used a few touches, like cups/glasses/rugs (was chilly on the feet). Bathroom was simple, there again not terribly welcoming However, the host was very nice and price was good. Trash had not been emptied and mirror could have used a cleaning

Thanks you for your input! Your ideas really help improve our next guest experience. NC regulations don't allow cups and glasses in rooms but we can add paper cups as well as an additional rug.

B&B
We really liked the couple that run this B&B. They do all they can to make your stay great. It is differently not make for longer stays then a few nights No tv in room, had to share a bathroom, we were in the up stairs bedroom, hard stairs to climb and the most hardest thing was we had to be quite all the time like at 7pm we were asked to be quiet.

Thanks for your review! Yes, we do not have TVs in the rooms, we do have a very fast WiFi you can use to watch your movies or use the one in the shared living area. Sorry about the stairs, it's a historic house so we cannot modify them. Please know that you don't have to be quiet at 7 pm. I guess another guest might have asked you that, but not us. Our quiet time is generally between 10 pm to 7 am. We enjoyed having you and hope to see you again.

Thank you for your comments. This is a historic campus under renovations, so some areas that are not open to guests are in repair. However, everything in the guests' area had been already refurbished.

It has potential or is on downhill slide
Odd 48 hour prior arrival time notification required to make sure host is there. All reservations done via on-line registration through an offshore provider who is not friendly. Did not see a phone number on the website. Did not feel open, relaxing, or particularly welcome. Felt like we had to stay in bedroom or kitchen. Require guests to haul away their own trash! Room was hot. Sleep Number mattress in a waterbed frame, but firmness control did not work. Bathroom marginally clean. Kitchen use allowed, but BYO food and pots and dishes.

We are sadly disappointed your stay didn’t meet your expectations. We do recommend letting us know immediately if there is anything we can do to make your stay more comfortable. But thanks for giving us the opportunity to let other folks know we do ask for their ETA. Sometimes the reservation sites don’t detail that we are a rural B&B so it's very much appreciated when we get a heads up on your arrival time and make sure you have accurate directions (Google maps works best around here). When you book, our colleague David (a close friend - not an “offshore provider”) will reach out about your ETA make sure you have directions. He’s gotten great reviews from guests about how he helps with their itinerary and special requests. And as with you, he was quick to make sure we could accommodate your request to receive your mail at our address. Finally, of course we never ask our guests to take out their own trash and our bathrooms are clean. When I read that, I was not quite sure if you're talking about the same B&B. Our central AC is kept at a comfortable cool during the summer and we have a complete guest kitchen for folks who prefer not to eat out. But again, we are very approachable hosts and interested in your well-being so please communicate with us if something is amiss. Thanks!

Comfort, quiet, and a glimpse into history awaits!
This beautiful historic landmark is being lovingly restored by a friendly and dedicated couple. Our room was clean, nicely furnished, and included a very comfortable queen bed and private bath. We were served a sumptuous breakfast at 8am each morning except our last, since we had to leave at 5 am. Our hosts left us a del service breakfast instead, and before hitting the road we enjoyed coffee, oatmeal, yoghurt, and cheese. The parlor features many interesting books, a marvelous collection of decor and furnishings, magazines, a chess set, and photographs depicting local history. We had breakfast one sunny morning on the side porch, where they keep the croquet set. Sunbury is one of many quiet little towns with long histories in the region, and while it has few stores, it offers lovely country drives to places of interest from Edenton and Hertford to Murfreesboro, and even Suffolk Virginia. It sits on the edge of the Great Dismal Swamp, with all of its natural and historic tours and activities. The Swamp was a major link in the Underground Railroad. Nearby Scotland Neck boasts an interesting bird sanctuary, with thousands of birds from around the world. The Teacherage itself has a fascinating history, which our hosts were enthusiastic to share. We felt right at home there, got great sleep, great food, and enjoyed the very special ambiance of this bucolic North Carolina bed and breakfast!

The bed was super comfortable but the room stayed pretty warm the entire time we were there (July). I never could connect to the wifi and cell signal is non existent for AT&T. Be prepared to travel at least 15-20 minutes for food. Perfect location to visit Dismal Swamp and Merchants Millpond State Parks. Everyone was very friendly.

As a "B&B Home" we do live on the property so we can always be available for our guests. What a shame to only read about this now as we would have easily solved that issue at the time. Please know we are here to help if any issues such as this occur in the future. We do hope you can visit us again in the future and have a great time in our home.

Excellent value. Superb service, lovely place.
I was late due to a late start and then getting lost. One of the hosts waited for me to arrive!! The service was superb, the price very reasonable, and the stay was excellent. The room was huge, the bathroom immaculately clean, and the bed&breakfast was lovely. I came for business, and plan to have my family stay here on a future vacation!

Great stop in the middle of NC
Just passing through, found a cheap place to stay on my way to Maryland, so I bunked at the B&B. The owners were fantastic, very nice and warm people. My only complaint was the fact that there wasn't much air circulation, or a ceiling fan, which made it a little hard for me to get to sleep. I'll know next time to bring a small fan. Otherwise, fantastic experience and wouldn't change a thing!

Wonderful days at the Teacherage
Our stay at the Teacherage was absolutely perfect! The owners Brenda and Graham really do an awesome job! They made us feel very welcomed at their cosy bed and breakfast place. The old house is very unique and charming and we loved it the minute we stepped inside. The delicious and rich breakfast was being served on the lovely porch every morning. The Teacherage is located perfectly when you want to visit the Outer Banks as well as enjoy the back country. Brenda and Graham always had wonderful recommendations for fun things to do and provided us with maps and leaflets. After staying at the Teacherage for almost a week we didn't feel like checking out at a hotel but rather like saying good bye to some new found friends.

Major concerns with this B&B!!!!
The B&B was a beautiful old home, but that is the extent of positives I can say. There no AC during our stay it was over 90 degrees everyday over 100 two days, we had to pay extra for AC if we wanted it. MThe room at night was so stuffy and hot, my wife and I could not breathe let alone sleep. My wife is pregnant with twins, didn't matter to them. We were the only ones staying at the time and the hotel was creepy. If you stay in the first floor it is a communal bathroom, and on the 4th day we were there, somebody went in our room when we were there and closed the windows and turned off all the fans. Breakfast was not included in our stay it an extra charge. Plus there was a mysterious charge on my credit card over and above what I paid for room. Outer Banks are an hour and a half away, Virginia Beach was over an hour away. Do not stay here.

We are late in responding to this review as we understood that people who damage rooms are not able to make reviews. This is the first time we had a guest damage our home and we have been waiting for Expedia to remove this review but alas, the longer this goes unanswered the longer others will continue to be misinformed. So here we go… Dear Guest, Thank you for your review - The room you chose was listed as not having A/C and for that reason we offered you an upgrade because it absolutely mattered to us that your wife was pregnant. You mentioned being the only guest during your stay - a small matter but we did have other guest during your stay at our B&B Home. And again, the special priced room you chose has a full bathroom that is shared with one other room (It's not communal# with breakfast available at a very small additional cost. As we prepare the adjoining guest room for an arriving guest we discovered the door between rooms had been broken. I can’t imagine why you did not inform us when it happened. We called Expedia as soon as it was discovered and they told us to charge you at least the minimum cost of repair. That was the “mysterious charge” you alluded to. #Photos available at Expedia) If this review is of any help, it should let people know we are a B&B home that offers a variety of services and prices for traveler’s budgets as we love to help in any way we can.

Unique Experience
We chose The Teacherage because we needed to be in Gates County and the price was very affordable. Our event was 7 miles south of The Teacherage, the closest place available. It is unique with some history to add charm. Graham and Brenda are very nice, smart and energetic. They were very interested in our well being. The outside needs alot of work, maybe they are trying to keep the antique look. It was very clean. We missed having A/C. I just assumed there would be A/C. The 3 summer evenings were rather mild and with our fan I was OK but my wife was not. If I could have cancelled my reservation, I would have. Graham and Brenda offered a gift certificate to accomodate. There is no TV, but I didn't really miss it. My ATT network cell phone did not work. They have wireless internet that was OK. Maybe in another year after more improvements, it will become the wonderful overnight experience envisioned. It probably would be fine in the fall, winter and spring and if you are in the area, I would give it a try. We had breakfast one morning on the veranda. It was good with fresh baked bread from the nearby bakery and we enjoyed meeting their other guests.

You get what you pay for. I selected The Teacherage to see what I would get for so low a price. I got a clean room in an old house operated by a nice young couple. I did not get TV, A/C, or a 3-prong wall outlet for my laptop. If I had not been the only guest that night, I would have shared a bathroom with the other guests.
