The best time to visit Sumatra is generally during the dry season, which runs from May to September. This period typically offers more consistent sunshine and less rainfall, making it ideal for exploring the island's diverse landscapes and wildlife. You'll find it easier to enjoy activities like jungle trekking, visiting waterfalls, and relaxing on the beaches without the interruption of heavy downpours. For those interested in wildlife spotting, particularly orangutans in the Gunung Leuser National Park, the dry season provides the best conditions for guided treks. The trails are less muddy, and the animals are often more active and visible. This makes it a prime time for adventurers and nature enthusiasts. If your focus is on surfing or diving, the dry season also generally offers calmer seas and better visibility in many areas, particularly along the western coast.
