Thanks to the airport’s prime location, right in the heart of Alsace, travellers land in a central spot that is perfect for getting to many of the area’s charming villages and cosmopolitan towns. It’s also close to the German border, so SXB is frequently used by travellers wanting to get to major German cities, including Baden-Baden and Freiburg.

Strasbourg Cathedral is high on most visitors’ to-do lists. The red-brick church is a fine example of Gothic architecture, and its exterior is covered in striking grimacing gargoyles. The Neoclassical Rohan Palace dates back to the mid-18th century, though the Archaeological Museum located in its basement takes visitors right back to the Palaeolithic period. The Museum of Decorative Arts and the Fine Arts Museum are also housed within the palace and contain works by Botticelli and El Greco.
When to Travel to Strasbourg
Strasbourg makes a great holiday destination all year round. Its location between the Voges Mountains and Black Forest means it benefits from warm sunny summers, and there are plenty of hikes and walking routes snaking through both areas. Tourism peaks during the summer as many travel to the city to see Strasbourg’s gardens in full bloom, and to take advantage of the Alsatian countryside right on their doorstep. During the summer, the historic centre, particularly in Petite France and around Place Kléber, comes alive as many restaurants and bars open outdoor terraces. Winter is also popular as skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts head up to the slopes on the Voges.
