Nestled between the Port du Rhin, Esplanade, Meinau, and Neuhof districts, this promising area is close to the city center, the university, and Germany. "Neudorf" in German means "new village." Indeed, this now densely populated neighborhood only emerged in the 1830s. It was originally established as an outer suburb of Strasbourg, difficult to access, marshy, and prone to flooding.
From the mid-19th century, constructions to regulate the Rhine, Ill, and other streams allowed the area to become populated. Dams and canals increased buildable land, and from 1870, under the German Empire, the population soared.
Rue de Bucarest (Bucharest Street), where our apartment is located, was inaugurated in 2014 by the Mayor of Strasbourg in the presence of the Mayor of Bucharest, in memory of General Bertelot who triumphantly entered the Romanian capital on December 1, 1918, after having greatly contributed to liberating the country.
