Staying on Vasilyevsky Island
Peter the Great had originally intended Vasilyevsky Island to be the centre of St. Petersburg. However, creating connections to the mainland proved too difficult, and the city’s fishing industry eventually took over. Today, the island is well connected to the mainland via the Metro system and footbridges.
Located on the island’s eastern tip, the Strelka district is a hub for St. Petersburg maritime history. The two large red Rostral Columns dotted with ships’ prows are reminders of the city’s booming fishing trade. As Strelka was visible from the Winter Palace, the area was always well maintained, and still is to this day, making it one of the most charming areas of St. Petersburg to stroll around.
Choosing a Hotel on St. Petersburg’s Mainland
The most popular hotels in St. Petersburg are situated around Palace Square, close to many sights including St. Isaac’s Cathedral and the Admiralty Building. Staying in the west of the St. Petersburg places visitors in quieter neighbourhoods, away from the usual tourist hotspots, but still within walking distance of the Mariinsky Theatre and Yusupov Palace.
Exploring Nevsky Prospekt
Most visitors head to Nevsky Prospekt to see its historic buildings. Many churches line the avenue, including the huge Kazan Cathedral. Not only does Nevsky Prospekt boast some of St. Petersburg’s best architecture, but it is also a hub of shopping and nightlife, and many visitors choose to end a busy day of sightseeing in one of its many vodka bars.
