A famed astrological clock, a magnificent wooden altar and a collection of Baltic religious art fill this church next to Rostock’s New Market.

The Marienkirche is a symbol of endurance for the people of Rostock. For almost 800 years, it has stood north of New Market, enduring as a symbol of the city’s faith and craftsmanship. One of few Rostock churches not heavily damaged during World War II, it now holds the city’s best collection of medieval and Renaissance art. Inside, find a painting by famed local artist Egon Tschirch depicting the church surrounded by the ruins of the area’s Anglo-American bombing raids.

Enter the portal, which opens magnificently onto the street. Marvel at the enormous 16th-century painted wooden altar standing at the front of the church, covered in gilt decoration. Walk around the edges of the church, where you can still spot elements of the medieval paintings that once adorned the walls. Admire the 13th-century bronze baptismal font, the oldest piece in the church, decorated with scenes from Jesus’ life and passion.

Stand in the playful colored light of the southern window, one of Europe’s largest single stained-glass windows. End your visit studying the 15th-century astronomical clock, which still works with its original clockworks. On the hour, the 12 apostles exit the door to ask for Jesus’ blessing, before Judas is shut out. Admire the moon phases and zodiac. The clock’s calendar was accurate until 2017.

Find the Marienkirche immediately next to the New Market, in the middle of Rostock’s Old Town. Drive here in 10 minutes from Rostock’s primary train station or walk in 20 minutes. The New Market serves as Rostock’s main transit hub. Limited parking is available on the street, though the New Market and surrounding streets are pedestrian-only.

The church is open to visitors from Monday to Saturday from mid-morning to early evening and on Sundays and holidays in the afternoon. Hours are more limited in winter. The church is free, although it has a suggested donation. Join a German-language daily tour during the summer for a fee.
