Climb to the top for gorgeous views across the city and the surrounding hills. The tower of St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral is the highest point in the city of Plzeň and the tallest church tower in the country. Admire the views from the top and explore the cathedral interior for its beautiful pieces of religious art. This Gothic church is thought to have been established toward the end of the 13th century, at the same time as the city was founded. However, the current building dates back to the 14th century. Since then, it has been subject to several renovation and remodeling projects. Although impressive in scale from the outside, the real appeal of St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral lies inside. Enter through the main door and look up at the net vault ceiling, which reaches 82 feet (25 metres) in height. Go up to the 19th-century main altar and view the 14th-century sculpture depicting the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. The marble carving is also known as the Madonna of Pilsen. Either side of the altar are 16th- and 17th-century wooden statues of saints. They used to adorn some of the cathedral's altars, but these were removed during previous restorations. See the 16th-century painting of St. Mary Magdalene, located on the organ loft pillar. Visit the Sternberk Chapel for its stunning art nouveau altar, which won a prize for its design in the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris. Make your way to the tower. With its steeple, this lofty structure stands at nearly 336 feet (102 metres). Pay the small fee to climb up the 301 steps to the viewing balcony. From here, peer down upon the whole of Plzeň and farther afield to hills that surround the city. St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral is located on Náměstí Republiky, Plzeň's main square. As such, it has good public transportation links. The church is open daily for services and self-guided tours. (364 reviews) This is a very good cheap option for staying in Prague. If you're there for the city centre, there is a door to door tram service which takes about 20 minutes to the centre. If you are there for the Congress Centre, it's ten minutes' walk away. The hotel was clean, my room was very spacious and fresh, and the staff were helpful. The hotel does not offer any catering, and the only downside is that the bar/restaurant which shares the site and is supposed to function as the breakfast and dining option, keeps erratic opening hours. It is great when it is open, but do not rely on it being open at the advertised hours. There is a fridge in the rooms and a Lidl five minutes away, so nobody needs to starve. (1,003 reviews) The location was the best part of the stay (apart from the breakfast); right in the heart of Old Town and walking distance to everything. Our Uber had to drop us off a very short distance away necessitating us to lug our luggage for 40 secs or so. Not a big deal! Removed 1 star because of a check-in snafu. The room given had 2 single beds (for a couple) because the hotel was fully booked and despite we making the reservations 3 months in advance. The room felt like a converted attic with the beds perpendicular to each other. There wasn't enough space to join them or bring them together. The shower was whole another issue with the showerhead so low that anyone above 5ft7in wouldn't be able to use it properly. We stayed for 2 nights but kept feeling the hotel stiffed us on the room with no compensation / the day manager not even bothering to come and talk to us. The breakfast spread was good and sitting in the room facing the Astronomical Clock Tower was a treat in itself. Would have rated this 7/5 given the history of the building, amenities, location if not for the room issue. Expedia Support was on point and worked with me quickly but they also couldn't do anything. (36 reviews) Lovely big apartment. Great area. Easy walking to most places. Also plenty of trams. Needed earplugs as busy road outside. Check in wasn't good. Was sent no information. Had to phone to find out where to pick up keys. A place that closed soon after I got there. Would have been good to have been sent that information first, especially as the place to pick them up closes at 11pm. Apart from that the place was great and would stay there again.
