![Špania Dolina is a picturesque historic village in central Slovakia, around 10 km from Banská Bystrica. Once famous for mining, the village is embracing low level tourism and is an excellent base for hiking and mountain biking, with the Veľká Fatra and Nízke Tatry national parks in close proximity.

The most notable attraction is the fortified church, which was built in Gothic and Renaissance styles, with a little bit of Baroque thrown in for good measure. Many of surrounding buildings have been preserved or rebuilt, including some wooden miners' houses.

To get here take the bus from Banská Bystrica (30 minutes; €0.70).

"Nagenoeg iedere week overnacht ik in hotels en over het algemeen ben ik positief, maar dit hotel was uitzonderlijk teleurstellend, slechte service tegen een belachelijk hoge prijs, 138,- euro per nacht inclusief ontbijt. Waarschijnlijk omdat er nauwelijks gasten waren was de service bizar slecht, het zal hopelijk beter zijn op drukke dagen. ![Špania Dolina is a picturesque historic village in central Slovakia, around 10 km from Banská Bystrica. Once famous for mining, the village is embracing low level tourism and is an excellent base for hiking and mountain biking, with the Veľká Fatra and Nízke Tatry national parks in close proximity.

The most notable attraction is the fortified church, which was built in Gothic and Renaissance styles, with a little bit of Baroque thrown in for good measure. There is a covered stairway from the main square up to the church (160 steps). Many of surrounding buildings have been preserved or rebuilt, including some wooden miners' houses.

To get here take the bus from Banská Bystrica (30 minutes; €0.70).

"The room was not clean someone had used the bathroom prior to my arrival and pissed all over the toilet seat. The do not disturb sign was ignored and 100 euro was taken while i was out. The door to the room would only close after shutting the door hard when i arrived to my room.for the first time the door was open. The room was littered with bugs. "
