Travel through several centuries and the beautiful scenery. As Southern Jutland is the location for important historical events and cultural treasures, you will be guided through time when you visit this part of the country. Both buildings and museums tell about Southern Jutland's cultural inheritance and the entire area has unique scenery. The southern part of Denmark is an area with proud traditions and many historical locations that you can experience when you travel to Southern Jutland. There are several beautiful castles and Schackenborg Castle was inhabited by members of the Danish Royal Family in the past. The castle can only be viewed from the outside, but it is still worth a visit and you can combine the trip with a guided tour of the castle gardens. You can also visit Gram Castle, Augustenborg Castle and Sønderborg Castle, where you can go on guided tours and learn more about the history of Southern Jutland. You can continue the historical tour to Dybbøl Mill, where you can grind flour and visit the museum with exhibitions from wars in 1848 and 1864\. Dybbøl is best known for the battle at Dybbøl Mill, which decided the outcome of the 2nd Schleswig War, where the mill was shot to pieces. At the exhibitions you can see items from the wars. Southern Jutland also offers beautiful scenery which can be experienced from the water. From Haderslev, the fjord boat Helene sails up through the 12-km long narrow fjord and you can get very close to both animals and plants. The fjord boat Helene offers themed sailings and you can dine on board. Also visit Haderslev Cathedral when you are in Haderslev and go on a guided tour or to a concert. Experience more of the maritime life at The Maritime Museum in Aabenraa. Here you will find a unique collection of maritime objects that seafarers have brought back over the last centuries. As the museum is also the home of The Cultural History Museum of Southern Jutland, you can learn more about transport, agriculture and the history of Aabenraa. If you are on a weekend break or a longer trip in Southern Jutland, you will experience Denmark's struggle to keep the country's borders and independence in the meadow as the only land border.
