If you are in Egypt and are not on a schedule, add this stop to your travels and you won't be disappointed. It is located about an hour east of the border of Libya, it is about an 8 hour drive from Cairo to Siwa. The mud houses fill the main part of Siwa and have existed there for hundreds of years. It only rains a couple times a year, which is how these buildings still exist, though they are no longer used. There are many cool things to check out in Siwa: - jump in one or several refreshing springs to cool down with (Cleopatra springs recommended) - float in thigh deep waters at Siwa Lake (aka Salt Lake); this lake may be just as salty if not saltier than the Dead Sea. Be careful walking on the rocks/sand as the salt may give you tons of tiny laceration that you don't notice till later.
