![After taking a 4.5 hour bus ride to Mokpo from Seoul, then another 2.5 hour ferry ride, I’ve finally arrived at this beautiful little island of Hongdo in the Yellow Sea, way down southwest of South Korea.
The island only has a population of 710.
On Hongdo, meaning "Red Island" due to the red coloring found on many of the rocky outcroppings, there are about 270 varieties of evergreens and 170 species of animals. The government wished to preserve the natural state of the island so Hongdo was designated as a Natural Preserve Area in 1965, and became part of Dadohae Marine National Park in 1981. "We stayed for one night as a family of four—two adults, one teenager, and one child. We initially expected two queen-sized beds but found one queen and one small double instead. However, we pushed the beds together, which made it spacious enough for all of us to sleep comfortably. The room was exceptionally clean and spacious. The bedroom was separate from the living area, and the bathroom was huge, featuring a separate shower room, toilet, and a lovely bathtub. The only downside was that the swimming facility was out of order during our stay. "
